What's the difference between an hd 4060 and a md 4060 Allison tranny?

Well, looking at the factory literature for a 1997 BMC, they say in the 2 axle version has an md4060, while the 3 axle version has an hd4060.

That is all I know, just wondering what the difference was.

you meant 3060,right?
I have no idea what the diff is between the MD and the HD.
I suspect maybe cooling,or programing.
some of the allisons have a retarder, which may be indicated by the R after the 3060.
some have a PTO,which may be the P after the 3060.
The 3060 is a very adaptable transmission.
It can be a 4 sped,a 5 speed,a 6 speed,all with programing.
It can have a transfer case to make it suitable for 4 wheel drive too.
I suspect the MD is Medium Duty
the HD is heavy duty.

I think the difference is max HP and Torq ratings. As I recall, the HD goes up to around 500hp.
In the old series, the 700 was the HD and the 600 was MD.

FYI in the BMCs the 37 footer has the MD3060 with the Cummins C8.3 engine.
The 40 footer has the HD4060 with the Cummins M11 engine.
The C8.3 has an exhaust brake and the M11 has a Jake brake.
