Default GPS, radio, TV upgrade...

Well guys and dolls here is another Bird upgrade. The "entertainment" end of our FC35 was very outdated (8 track, 15 watts per channel@3% distortion) and basically shot. I desired an all-in-one electronic player to get away from several seperate units. After some serious research we bought an ECLIPSE AVN7000 through Circuit City. It does just about everything but take out the trash...

Major functions include: AM/FM, GPS, CD/DVD player and color backup camera. It also plays MP3, iPod, and has satellite radio and TV tuner capabilities as well as a remote 6 CD changer and has a remote control to boot.... As you can see, the main screen moves in and out as needed. We also pitched all 14 dry rotted speakers and replaced them with Polk Audio speakers. Upgraded all the speaker wiring and installed 3 new Pioneer amps for a total of 1480 watts of output. The new amps are installed where the old tv tuner guts were over the drivers head.

I moved the radio from overhead and put it where the C/B was. New C/B went next to the drivers seat. Had to make a new enclosure from scratch for the radio and also installed a 12volt cooling fan in it to boot. It is under the black grill right over the radio.

Worst of it was cleanly getting the wiring up overhead. I made up a "gutter" out of a piece of 2" X 3" aluminum box tubing. I cut out one wall to make a "U" shape out of it, painted it black and then screwed it to the center channel of the windshield post. I must say it came out very nice. It was by far our biggest one time expense and set us back about 5K. The GPS function is great and what really is nice is the GPS software is loaded on the hard drive so you do not have to load a CD everytime you want to us it as with most stereo/GPS units.

We can be listening to the radio, watching the GPS on the small screen and have a DVD playing on the overhead TV all at one time. Lastly, the TV is a Phillips 22" LCD HD flat panel. There is an overhead door issue with regard to clearance so that was as big a TV that would comfortably fit with the overhead doors open. By the way, on our last summer 6 week trip, the TV was turned on a total of 2 times...

Wow, look at the size of his speakers. I bet it has some "punch" to it. It is hard to find an amp out there that puts out less than 100 watts per channel. With 14 plus speakers in a typical Bird from front to back you end up with a lot of power. It is nice though to be tooling down the road with something like John Denvers "Take me home country road" playing with the breeze blowing in your face. It all really is a labor of love keeping our vintage Birds up to speed....Thanks for the kind words!
