Default Inside Tag Tires Ignored?

I have found some coaches where the inside tag tires were skipped come replacement time and only 6 were replaced. Is this a common practice? What happens when the inner tag tire blows, does it do as much damage?

An inside tag?

You mean an inside driver I think.

Not sure why they would be any less important.

On another note please count the number of tires total on the coach your looking at and let us know! Must be a doozer!

BTW I never replace the inside tags on mine. don't know anyone here that does!

The "Tag Axel" only has 2 tires. One on each side.

My mistake. I thought there was an inside dually. That would explain why no one replaces it.

So lets clear this up. Ever Bird has at least one rear axle, called a DRIVE axle, with 2 tires on each side, an inner and outer. Then, if its a coach with an additional rear axle, or tag axle, it then has 2 more tires, one on each side on that axle, behind the drive axle.

That is how you come up with either 6 or 8 total tires on a Bird - 2 up front, 4 on the drive axle, and then maybe 2 more on the tag axle.

If you are saying people don't swap the inner drive axle tires, that doesn't make sense. If you are asking if they swap the inner tag axle tires, there is no such thing.

Hope this make sense!

It makes all the sense in the world. Thanks for clearing it up. I learned that I was half right and half wrong. An LX coach that I am looking at has had the 6 outer tires replaced but has the old original inner drive axle tires on it. Those inners are 12 yrs. Old but at least had no sun on them. Sounds like a recipe for disaster, right?

Wouldn't be a disaster at all. Buy two new tires before you drive it any distance now that you know it needs them.

If it was me, I'd consider buying two new front steer tires and move the existing steers to the drive axle.
