Default Newbie Help I can't go faster than 5mph on hills

This is my first post so I apologize if this question has been asked before. We took delivery of our 1979 FC yesterday and are in love. It is in incredible and drives great on the straights but when we climb a hill in the 5/8% range I can only go 5-7mph and from what I have read this is not normal I was hoping to get around 25 mph like others have stated. Has anyone had this issue before and if so any ideas on what service I need to have performed? Thanks again in advance for any help.

What is the maintenance history. When was the fuel filters last changed? Is the fuel fresh? A bit more info might help us help you.

Ian,
First of all, welcome...

The first thing that comes to mind is the throttle sweet spot.
Here's a good thread on that:

But it sounds like there might be more going on. I was also thinking of fuel filters, as Rick mentioned.

Thanks for the reply! Yes fuel is all fresh I just drove it 700 miles home and cycled through the tank a few times. I did not have fuel filter replaced during my service prior to pick up. I will check that in the AM.

I just had all the belts replaced and a complete inspection done by COACH CRAFT but they did not do the filters. I am hoping they just got clogged during the long drive I will replace them tomorrow and head out for a drive and see what happens.

Do air filter too. Does it smoke when climbing so slow, or not?

It also depends on the length of the hill, I would expect. But as others have said, I would replace all the fuel filters and the air filter. That engine is not an Indy winner so you can expect lower climbing speeds, also which rearend to you have? If you're getting black smoke, you're burning more fuel than it is getting air to mix in. Check out Finn's Inn Express website for John Finn's modification to get more air to a 210HPNA engine. Good luck & Welcome.

8% is pretty steep. If its long and steep having owned an NA FC they do get down pretty slow. If it just feels like 5 mph you might be ok but if it actually is that's another story. If it's more like 15 on an actually long 8% you may be OK. The devil is in the exact details
