Default The Good, the Bad and the Ugly!!!

Sorry for the long winded post, but I thought it needed to be told the way it was!!!

Well I have been bitten by the ECU bug!!!
Going through Michigan on a the way to a campground my keypad just started to flash after hitting a bump in the road... Drove into the CG and parked for a week there, could not find any thing loose or not in its place, the rear view monitor also stopped working, pulled it apart and found the cable had dropped out of the back, plugged it back in and it worked...
Time to leave, started up and KP not flashing, good...
Left CG all was working fine, went into gear was shifting well...
30 or so miles down the road started flashing again, started slow then faster and faster until the KP went blank, but still in gear and moving, at the next exit pulled into a casino and parked and shut it down... Now this is Thursday night...
In the morning called the nearest Allison repair shops;

THE BAD: W.W. Williams in Grand Rapids, after explaining what I experienced, he asked what was I driving??? I told him a Bluebird MC!!!
HE SAYS WE DON'T WORK ON MH's, he told me to call Holland Motor Homes, which I did and the service manager said they have no way to diagnose the trans...
So if you ever have trans problems in MI, don't call them!!!

THE GOOD;
Called another Allison shop; Valley Truck Parts, left message, went to web site left message about that, if they had a mobile tech to come out???
I was experiencing and what I was driving, trans S/N, Now its after hours, I get an email from a guy named Gary Troost, He told me they don't have mobile service, to call speedwrench.com, they have 24/7 road side tech's, called left a message never got a call back!!!
Emailed Gary again and asked if he could take me in on Monday, I will get towed there... He came back and said they will take me first thing
Monday, this is Saturday now...
Emailed again with, Buzz is our service manager and call the number he gave me in the AM...
He emailed me again and said he called Buzz and he will take you first thing Monday 7 AM... I replied to him, I will have to be towed and he gave me two tow company's... I thanked him...
Sunday Morning, I started up the Bus and KB lit up and put in gear and moved it ok, so I drove the bus 23 miles to their shop, so I was there at 7 AM, would not move in the AM, so Buzz got out a tow motor and pushed the bus to his shop from the hitch!!!
He had a tech named Pete Beaudoin M158376, whom had worked at Spartan for 15 years prior to working there at Valley Truck Parts...
Pete tested with a computer in the VIM and found that the ECU had code;
D1 6932, which I found out was to replace the ECU!!!
Put in a new ECU and KP and at 11 AM I was on the 'Road Again'...
While I was waiting for Pete to finish buttoning up everything, Gary came out and asked what he found, I said the ECU, he then went inside to talk to Buzz, and I asked Pete whom, Gary was, Pete says he is one of the owners, Pete also told me prior to this that the ECU cost was $3200!!!
After Gary spoke with Buzz, He came out and told me that they reduced the price of the ECU to $2550, and a total of the work was 3130.65!!!

All I can say, is This; IS What I Call Excellent Service and Competent Work!!!

Future reference for all Bird owners with Allison transmissions.

Always check prices at TKT first for ECUs. Worth paying for FEDEX one day delivery in most cases.

https://www.tktsales.com/

I carry a spare Allison ECU and Allison speed sensor. Not much can leave us stranded with a mechanical engine.

Wow Larry!

That must have been some bump to knock the cable out of the monitor!!

Glad you got going again! Thats sort of like the run around I got looking for an Allison dealer in Jackson, MS a few years ago. Ended up needing a new ECU then too ;{
TKT wasnt too much help then though, only could do a repair which would leave me stuck for a week or so.

See you in New Paltz, but guess you wont be in for a day or two!??

Drive Safe!

Dan,
I agree with what you are saying, I was scouring all the info on the WOG, but I just didn't think I could get it done in a timely fashion as Barbara had to be at her Mom's and I was trying to get her to NJ so she would be there for her pacemaker replacement... I was already committed to the shop as I had to take Barbara to the airport so she could be in NJ!!!
The shop did give me my ECU and Keypad for a future rebuild for a spare...

Scott,
Thanks, but you know that from what has been written about W.W.Williams, especially the ones out west, they always seem to take care of the guys whom have been serviced by them, go figure!!!
