Default 2004 M380 Front Axle

Hello everyone. I am currently looking to purchase a 2004 M380. The unit looks to be a clean unit, properly maintained, good owner in Arizona. The unit number vin is 100088. Below are two pictures that are taken off of the unit. I am trying to figure out if it has a 14,700 pound rated axle or hopefully a 16,000 rated axle. I am looking at the unit tomorrow. The only weight limits i see directly on the axle says 13,000 pounds. I am completely confused and not sure where i can find out this information. If anyone can help or has any advice or anything else to double check while i am in Arizona i would appreciate it.

Marvejeanm380 Thanks for the thread link. I did read that thread. The dealer could not find anything that says 14,700 or 16,000. Just this plate that says 13,000 and I won't know until tomorrow when I get to Arizona where that plate is located. I am not sure if the VIN number identifies it as being constructed later in the run with the 16,000 pound alterations done. I am considering getting the larger rims and tires. I do appreciate you checking into this for me.

I wouldn't worry to much about it. If you like the coach and everything checks out, buy it.

M380 is a great coach. I never had any issues with weight but then again we traveled light without loading much other than what we needed for a few weeks. Factory wheels and 12R tires. I know allot of folks watch their weight closely and adjust loads accordingly, but I never worried about it much. Proper air pressure and good date codes on the tires and never had any issues.

The tire & rim upsize has been done by a few owners, however this upgrade doesn't change the axle rating, I think the ride might be a little smoother due to lower tire pressures.
We love our 380, and the ride on stock size tires/wheels is very smooth. I wouldn't worry about the front weight loading, better to install the front ball joint boots and zerk fittings.
Post pics if you buy it

We are Full Time M380 owners. Did upgrade to 315's. Did not go to the wider wheel. Felt we had the 12Rs loaded to the max all the time. The 315s give a little more wiggle room with out changing the wheel size.

Front suspension tag is on top of the "wishbone". Cut the front wheels hardover and you should see it on the top. Pic 1 below is what mine looks like. There are also Meritor tags on the calipers, pics 2 & 3. As I understand it, the 14 to 16 front suspension "upgrade" was a pen & ink mod only. But it's nice to see a bigger number on your tag!

Lance is right, check over the ball joints/boots. PO of my coach didn't know how to come down grades & burned the brakes up including melting the boots & cracking the rotors . Big $$ later coach now has almost new brakes all the way around. Hard lesson learned was don't assume an almost perfect cosmetic condition = a similar mechanical condition. Even if you think you know what to look for, get YOUR own mechanic to look the coach over. Preferably one who knows BB's. Having another BB owner (especially one with a 380) at hand can help too.

Wouldn't worry too much about the front axle rating. Don't think there has ever been one that's failed. A four paw weigh should be done before you spend any $$ to address what could prove to be non-issue weight concerns. I thought mine was at or over on the front and when I finally got around to having it done, I was nearly 1,000 under with almost perfect L-R balance. Why then would I go to 9" and 315's on the fronts?

Lastly PM if you want to talk, especially if the Arizona you're coming to is Phoenix. Willing to bet someone on the WOG knows the coach? Good luck with your trip!!

Default M380 Review Arizona

Van,

Thank you very much. What wheel is this over? I couldn't find it when I was out there Saturday, but I'm sure that I will find it later.

To All - Not sure about this one. When I asked about where are the records for all the recalls the owner of premium coach group showed me the front wonderbird logo and said this proves that everything was done. I am not in any way suggesting that he would mis-represent the coach. He is currently trying to reach out to the owner who is on the east coast just so I can talk to him. I'm sure once I do that I'll feel better, but I was totally unfamiliar with the logo being proof of recalls being done. Is there another way to validate in case I can't get a hold of this owner. I thought there would be some records in print. Any advice? The coach looked like a very nice coach. Just the last T and I to dot and cross.

-Charlie
