Default Kohler 12.5 Generator Rotor

The generator is a Stamford Newage 15KW. The difference in price between the 12 and 15KW was $30 so I opted for the larger one.
This generator is brushless and has its own regulator.

Problems encountered:
1 - frame is 6 sided instead of being round so the rear vibration mounts did not fit. There was a bracket under the generator which I had modified so the vibration pads could sit on it.
2 - lifting bracket had to be modified.
3 - control box which sits on top of the generator was too tall. I moved the regulator onto one side and the output wiring block on the other side, this allowed me to cut the control box by 3 inches. It should clear the frame now.
4 - exhaust system had two mufflers in series with a piece od flex pipe. The flex pipe was worn through so exhaust was going under coach. The first muffler will not fit because of the shape of the generator so I will have to get this reshaped at a muffler shop.
5 - some wiring changes since I now have an "internal regulator".

It has been a long haul, hopefully when I go home on Tuesday, we will be able to see if it fits into the cavity without hitting anything. In addition to all of this, the area got smaller because of the 1 1/2 inch insulation I used.

Woody, sorry forgot the pricing. Price $2800 delivered with taxes.

I looked at installing a new genset, and they were all about $8000 for 8 to 10KW and up to $17000 for a 15KW.
I have 3500 hours on the motor, and according to all you diesel gurus, it is not even broken in yet.
I know it will be noisy, but I have tried to mitigate that somewhat. I have also thought that I might pick up a 2000 watt inverter technology generator for when I need it during the quiet times.
The 2000 watt will charge my batteries and allow me to use the toaster or even get some hot water if I wish - all through power management.

Before I bought our bus thru Randy, I talked with a guy in the Houston area that had a 12.5 with a bad engine. His FC is still listed on Craigs List and I would bet he would part with his genny parts. Can't hurt to try. Rick

Default Kohler 12.5 Generator Rotor

Thanks Rick:
I had looked at another generator for parts, and by the time I pay shipping to up here in the north, the shipping was more than the cost of the generator. With all of this said, I know of the problems that could be had with the Kohler so for the cost, it was better for me to purchase a new generator.

With the insulation, new muffler and pipes, I am hoping that it will be a lot quieter. If I am not satisfied with it, then I will look into the conversion that Randy had done on JF coach.

Bill,
How does the generator separate from the engine? (I know, bolts) I am really wondering how the drive is connected. I saw Randy's entry about a jack, but that was referencing a bad rotor. I plan sometime in the future to change the rear main seal and I think I will have to pull the generator off to get at it.

I'm not Bill, but the rotor has a tapered shaft on it that fits into a tapered hub,A log bolt goes through the rotor to hold it on,the bolt will come right out,but breaking the tapers apart is tough.
Bills rotor was junk,so the jack would work fine,on a good rotor there must be a trick i don't know about.
