Default hydraulic fan motor

Hello gang,

I have an 86 PT38 that I need to rebuild the hydraulic fan motor on. Has anyone ever done this job on this model year coach. It has the 8V92 engine. What is the best way to get the radiator out to access the fan blade and motor. Randy thought that once I got the grate off the outside the body the colored piece under the grate was removable. On the 86 it is not. It's riveted.
And t appears the radiator is bigger then the opening. (Also, there is the oil cooler between the grate and the radiator.) So it doesn't look like it can come out the side. Does it need to go out the bottom. If so, how do you remove the fan shroud to remove the fan blade. It appears you cannot drop the radiator without taking the fan blades off first. Can the fan motor be accessed by removing the power steering/fan motor oil canister just to the left of the motor. (Looking in from the rear) Perhaps like I said to Randy, I should get some REAL skinny guy to stand between the motor and the frame and unbolt the fan motor (LOL). I know this is going to be a messy job so any help would be deeply appreciated.

Don,i think you need to look again for BOLTs.
the bolts run front to back, you have to lie down and look up to see them.

Randy...you be the man!!!

I got the radiator out last night. What a mess in there. The fan motor has been leaking for about 2 years or more, but has just recently gotten worse. Gonna power wash everything today, and get the seal in the motor replaced. In case there are any problems with the motor, do you know of anyone thats got one for sale.

Thanks
Don

When you get a chance Don could you put a signature block together so we know where you're located and what year/type coach you have. This will help greatly in getting info to you.

Thanks Randy,

Do you think I should rebuild my fan motor or buy one of yours.
How much do you want for one.

I'm on my way to the hydraulic shop nearby to get a price on checking mine and resealing it.

Don,

Did you rebuild your fan motor? I have my radiator out, and plan on getting the fan motor out tomorrow. I will either need to put a seal in it, or have it rebuilt.

Hello Adam.

Yes I had the fan motor rebuilt. The hydraulic shop found that the shaft that the fan attaches to was worn where the seal rode on it. They tried to get a new shaft but they are discontinued. So they simply machined the shaft slightly and used a seal that had a bit smaller inside diameter. They installed new gaskets which are made of copper because of the hight pressure. It was a couple of hundred bucks for the whole job, but worth it. They did a great job.

I also replaced all the hydraulic and coolant hoses located behind the radiator. Now is the time to do it while you have easy access. If I can figure out how to post the pictures of the job, I'll put them up.

Don:

I had my hydraulic motor rebuilt, $175.00, replaced all the hoses at the same time. Getting the radiator out is a real picnic, right?
