Does your 89 have a DDECI? The intermittent CEL can occur because of 'over-fueling". Sometimes you have to lift your right foot to go faster...or grab another gear. Where's Woody? Maybe he can explain it.

My 1985 FC has a check engine light. It's a high powered flash light which I use when I need to check the engine.

My DDEC I has a history of check engine light flashing. I have documentation from my POs where it has been serviced several times and nothing has been found.

If it is a DDEC I, there are some good threads on improving the power and grounds to ECM. I am hoping to apply these improvements sometime soon as I see my check engine light flash, mostly on hill climbs, but there is nothing meaningful (at least to me) when I read the codes with my Pro-Link 9000.
