Default Flying to BB driving?

Have any of you made the transition from flying to driving? I've had the airplane addiction for 40 plus years, still have a Bonanza...and fly fires in the summer.

Having spent the last half-decade out west flying fires in the summer, I've become pretty convinced that having a BB would be a great way to spend the rest of the year. I've had a couple friends who have had BBs, and loved them.


A couple of decades ago I had a SOB diesel pusher, had no troubles, but just wasn't the right time in my life...now, I think it would be...but would like any feedback that anyone would give about transitioning from flying all over the country to driving all over the country......

You may drive fast enough in a bird to think you're flying but we all hope you never get the wheels off the ground. There is a saying in the bird community, " You can drive as slow as you want all the time but you can drive too fast only once". Because **** is bound to happen.

After working airplanes for 30 years at Atlanta Center it was a no brainer....one of my favorite sayings late in my career was....THAT'S why I bought a RV!

In my younger years I was a Pileit ......we never made enough money to buy a plane.

My brother would chop wood and I would pile it.

No problem on the transition. You just fly slower and burn a heck of a lot more fuel. You will also find your banana boat is far less expensive to maintain.

I have held a private multi-engine instrument rating since 30 years old and have 4000 flight hours owning my own Baron for 35 years. I am 75 now. I even did aerobatics in my Swift. Great fun.
A big ole' bus burns about 10 gallons an hour. The banana boat burns about 10-12 gallons per hour based on year and the engine configuration.

You can go from there.

And you’ll still have an altimeter and a whole bunch of other gauges to look at. Almost like you were in a cockpit.

I've spent the last 25+ years (over 18K hours) looking down at our country, flying people from here to there, wishing I could stop and enjoy the sights. They pay me to fly, but I gladly pay to drive my bus, stop where the mood strikes and enjoy the sights. My dad was an airline guy as well, and (regrettably) never took the time to stop and enjoy life. Airplanes suck (coming from someone who makes a good living off of them). For me, no choice - drive slow, live for the day and enjoy the ride

Amazing how many pilots own Bluebirds, jump into ownership, every rally we’ve been to, I’ve met pilots, and controllers, plenty of hangar flying...
