Default check engine light

My check engine light comes on mainly at freeway speeds as I let off the throttle. As soon as I get back on the throttle it goes off. All my gauges read fine. What does this light monitor and any ideas where to start looking.

Kip
I believe it may be low coolant switch in top of radiator--check level.
Also could be low oil pressure/hi temp sensor etc. May be just a BAD sensor--ground maybe. Just check fluid levels. Hopefully nothing serious.

Default Check Engine Light

My check engine light has been going on/off for 10 years (150,000 miles). I worked on the coolant level switch, oil pressure fine, no codes when checked by Detroit Dealers etc. I have never cured the problem. The only solution I came up with is duct tape over the light.

All the fluids were checked before my trip. I was thinking some kind of a vacuum leak as it only happens at speed when letting off the throttle. All the operating gauges looked normal

So am I reading here that the check engine light just monitors fluids levels and temperatures? so if my gauges read normal I probably don't have a problem with my engine

Kip

Oil pressure also IF I remember correctly.
If the system had been operating correctly
MAYBE H Turner wouldn't run the 84 hot and cooked the motor
then I would not have 2 Birds--1 Fine other 1 is a work in progress.
I would be sure and keep engine alarm circuits up in operating order.

I post this from memory and my memory isn't that good any more (or maybe never) but I think the check engine light monitors the coolant level and the oil pressure and level electricly. I am not sure about the pressure. If levels are OK, check the monitors. If the monitors are good, you have a wiring problem and you can decide whether to chase it down or commit suicide.
