So, if you have a 1000FG, you could add the spacer so the FH elements would work in the FG. I believe most elements shipped are now the 2020 design for the FH which requires a spacer if placed into a FG housing.

There was a transition period when Racor shipped this spacer with the filter elements. You only need one spacer for the 1000FG and one for the 900FG. The spacer does not get changed with the filter element.

However, Racor no longer provides the spacer with the elements. I assume they believe everyone has now added a spacer to the older FG filter housings and they are saving the cost of not providing them when they are no longer needed. The problem is if your filter element has not been changed in a few years, then you might not have the spacer. The new filter elements will not work correctly until you add a spacer.

So, if you have recently acquired a vintage Bird and are changing your filter elements for the first time, be sure that the element being removed matches the element being installed (at the top). If you see a difference, then you might not have the spacer installed and that could lead to the new filter element not working correctly. The spacer sits right on top of the center shaft before inserting the new element.

Glenn
Hi Glenn,

After reading your post I decided I should try to get some spacers for my filter housings so I called Racor technical support today and asked about needing a spacer to use my newly purchased 2020 and 2040 filter elements. They said the 900FG and the 900FH both use the exact same 2040 filter and no spacer is required. They also said the 1000FG and the 1000FH use the exact same 2020 filter and no spacer is required.

They said that only the 500 series filter housings made before 1997 required a spacer to use the newer elements and that they ship a spacer with the new elements.

Just to double check I called back and talked to a second technician and he said the exact same thing. He said he had also seen on the internet where people said a spacer was required for the 900FG and the 1000FG but he said that is not correct.

I'm not sure one way or the other and I'm not saying you're wrong Glenn but they both sounded confident about not needing a spacer. If you are certain that spacers are needed for the 900FG and 1000FG please call Racor and let them know.

I am attaching the PDF Racor sent me about the 500 Series spacer.

You do not need the spacer. I use the same filter on my 900FG and DO NOT use the spacer and it works perfectly.

John / Tom,

Thanks for clearing up my confusion. It has been about six months since I went through this exercise and I was working off my memory...bad idea.

In recollection, I clearly remember the Racor for my Generator needed the spacer. The Generator must use the 500FG....I don't have my blue box with me; it is in the bird. If that is the case, then what I did matches up with what you were told.

I was also thinking my 1000FG on the engine used a spacer....but now my memory is not as clear. Next time I pull the filter, I will check to confirm. But based on what you were told, I believe my memory is playing tricks again and I would believe the factory info.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the statement that they ship the spacer with the 500 element. When I went to West Marine to pick up the generator element, only one of the elements on the shelf had the spacer. The other elements were newer and did not have the spacer.

I knew a spacer was required, but got confused on where it was required. Thanks again for keeping me straight.

Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Thanks for pointing out the spacer requirement. Even if its just for the 500 series its good to know because I wasn't aware that any of them needed spacers. I'm going to call again next week to ask for about spacers for the 500 series because the PDF says spacers "will be included in element gasket packs through the end of 2007" but on the phone they told me they were still included. One way or the other we need to get spacers for our generator filters.

Thanks for the information Glenn.

I just got 2 cases of Racor filters, one for the 8v92 and one for the genny. I checked and the genny filters have the spacer and a copy of the instructions for installing the spacer only in the older units.
