Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Need 3208 coolant tube and tach drive 1978 FC

Hello,
About to remove my radiator and am searching for a couple of parts to install while i'm at the front of the engine. I need a tach sender and a coolant tube (see photo) for a 1978. The photo with the red arrow points to the part I need. Any help or leads are appreciated!

Did you get the pipe plug out of the cover where the coolant fill tube goes? You probably won't, just move on with out it, look over some truck cooling systems, the light will come on.

Most likely rusted in there? Also if you notice my heater send is coming out right below the compressor and there is an unused fan or water temp switch in the port where the heater hose should come out of (immediately below and to the right). Are these ports interchangeable or should I swap them?

Temp gage sender should be by thermostat. The ports upper end of the front plate are all supply or pressurized by the water pump.

So the tube in my photo with the red arrow is a bypass hose? I guess I don't really need that because my heater hoses should also circulate the coolant when the thermostat is closed so the water pump wont be ruined

Is there any reason to preserve the original tach drive? My tach is erratic, and I I was thinking it would be better to just get a new tach and sender, and use the threaded port in the bell housing and sense the teeth on the starter ring on the flywheel. Any reason not to do this?

I'm not opposed to an alternator tach either. I just thought it would be really easy to install a new original style tach drive if I have the radiator removed. The problem is finding the part!

That's the way it is on both my FCs. Made the change.

Will I need a new gauge as well and do you have a link or part number or photo of the bell housing port?

If looking at the engine from the front,, the sensor hole should be in the bell housing at about the 5 O-clock position.

Sensors available at many places that sell gauges, here’s one example.
