Default XJ or Grand Cherokee

I'm thinking of switching from my TJ to a Cherokee. The wrangler is fun to drive but really isn't meeting my needs. It's pretty basic with a 4 banger thats badly underpowered, hardtop that leaks regularly and almost unusable to haul any friends...(they better be good friends).
I think a Cherokee would be better suited. I've been looking for a 01 XJ but they are getting pretty picked over. The grand cherokees are plentiful and cheap.
Pros or cons for either? I've pretty much just been looking at 01 XJs..last year and GC's 2001-04.

My FIL was recently purchasing a new (to him) Jeep for four-wheeling after he rolled the one he had (which was a 94 Cherokee I think).

He said to me that the Grand Cherokees are known to have some transmission issues - apparently needing lots of repair and replacement. So, he was avoiding those.

I can't help much beyond that.

Nice but way out of what I'm looking to pay!
I use this vehicle just as a toad and running to the grocery store, I want dependable but cheap.
It's confusing about the GC transmissions. Looks like if I stay between 01 and 04 it's not an issue

Hey Kip,
yes 4 banger jeeps aren't much fun. I would do some soul searching and figure out what your primary reason for the jeep would be. If it's to carry other humans then just about anything other than an Jeep would be better.

The wife and I went through this and ended up with an old CJ5. I wanted something unique, small, and don't care to carry passengers. It's for a tow'd, will go anywhere, and fun to drive. I looked at Cherokees and off road they are not too bad with leaf suspension in the rear and coil up front. But they are uni-body and all enclosed just like by 4x4 F150 so took the fun out it.

I looked at Grand Cherokees but they have historically been riddled with electrical issues. Check out www.carcomplaints.com and you can search by year, make, model of any vehicle.

Good luck with your search.

I've have a 2000 cherokee since 2004, good dependable, yep some repairs,
expect to replace exhaust, brakes,, maybe wheel cylinders, rear springs & shocks. Rear main seal leaks but you can replace yourself,
most trouble has been the A/C, I replaced two evaporators & a compressor filter dryer., Check with Mallie, he has a few XJ's and a 2000 ??? Grand with the same manual transfer case. not sure which years.

I went with a Liberty. Grand Cherokee doesn't have the best reviewed and the Cherokee is hard to find in good shape at a decent price IMO. Liberty kind of floats under the radar. I was surprised how much I like it.

I'm on the hunt for a late XJ that isn't rusted out. I also looked at the Grands, but I decided to go for an XJ for a few reasons - one, I want to do some mild trail running with it and the aftermarket support is much larger. It also weighs a bunch less than the GC. And it's also not nearly as ugly as a GC

If you want a putz-around I think the GC is a lot more comfortable, larger inside, but at a cost!

Default New 2019 Wrangler?

After watching the Jeep gang at Q, am thinking it’s time to upgrade the Fiat. Been looking at Cars.com come-on-over ads. New 2019 Wranglers promise no replacing anything, no rust, no repairs for awhile, known maintenance costs, warranty, available with auto or manual and they smell good (till first off-road excursion ). All it takes is the steep entry fee - base Sport ($32K) and Rubicons ($40K to $50k+). To those numbers add tax, license, setup for toad towing and optional trickout “goodies”. If I could only figure out a way to add 12” of ground clearance to the Fiat...

I bought a 2004 grand Cherokee(wj) and lifted it 4". Made first trip to CO this summer at Lake City. Made the loop as well as many side road trails. Very capable climber in low range and also has hillside assist for downhill. It has 4.7 v8 which comes with larger transmission. Alot less problems. I put offset wheels and 32" tires on it also. Had to add a 2.5" drop pitman arm to help with death wobble. Next is winch bumper and adapt my tow bar. Call me if you have questions. 580-436-7873
