If you seldom run toll roads, why not just pay cash?

Ez pass and others provide discounts for tolls. Some tolls are not manned or don't accept cash. Plus, why stop if you don't have to?

One easy answer:. Convenience. You don't need to carry the cash, you don't need to slow down and spend ten minutes getting back up to speed, you don't have to wait in line, and don't have to worry about reaching the toll booth operator when you are sitting a good bit higher than them.

Why have one? A run through the Northeast Corridor will cost about $100, hard to pay with quarters and dimes from the change bowl

This is the increasing bigger issue

Not sure about the rest of the country, but in FL you can use the toll roads without a transponder even in the areas that don't have booths. The cameras will get your tag and about 6-8 months later you'll get a bill in the mail. It is more expensive than using a transponder. I guess they charge for the hassle they go through to find you by your tag number.

From my experience get the EZ Pass without question. Besides convenience which is major, it might just save you money if you are towing a toad since some of the booth people charge you by the axle and it can get expensive. Since I mostly stay in the West where we don't have many toll roads, when I returned from the east where they were mostly toll roads, I cancelled my EZ Pass account because there was a $10 per month charge for just keeping the account inactive.

Does anyone know what kind of pouch an unused transponder should be placed in so its not charged? Should just RFID blocking work?

The issue I see is now I have a NC quickpass/EZ pass and my GA peach pass for the toad. And just a EZ pass for the bus. With my luck I'll hit a road where I'll be charged for 4 axles 3 times.

They usually come with what they call a 'read prevention bag'. It's similar (if not the same) to those static-proof bags that computer components are sometimes shipped in.

In fact if you order the ez-pass online, it's shipped in the bag, so you won't get billed for the tolls the UPS / Mail truck passes through.
