Default Xmas gifts

I think i'm going to get my youngest grand daughter a shovel for xmas.
The rate shes going at school thats about the only job she will be able to get, digging ditches.
A child of divorced parents and the father is not doing her much good.
Shes 15 i think.
Maybe a shovel will give her a wake up call.

Don't worry Randy, most of the jobs have been de-skilled to the point where you don't need much education to do them (folks at auto parts places for example)

I hear you brother! We have a son that was in similar condition at that age (11 years ago). I would say not everyone is made to go to school. A vocation may be a better option early on. While a shovel points to a vocation, for a 15 year old girl may be a sewing machine be a better choice and won’t label you as mean grandpa!

Happy Trails,

I'm already labeled as a mean grandpa, what i should do is take the shovel and hit my son in law in the head with it.

Gotta tell ya,

I was headed in the wrong direction when I was a kid. At 12 they sent me off to a military boarding school for 6th grade. That did the trick! I came back polite, mannered, educated, and respectful (Yes Mam, No Sir) and made the honor roll 4/6 times. Not bad for an uncontrollable kid barely passing.

Only took that one year for me. Now my brother is another story, after 2 years he still needed "adjustment" hee hee hee

Ohh yeah,i get the whole not doing well in school deal, thank god i could make cars run,i fixed the teachers cars in the parking lot to get by.
But the real problem is the kids dad,he will not speak to my daughter or me about her problems, hes ignored her and she will have to leave as soon as high school is over.
Ohh well,life rolls on...

yup, it was lack of a dad in my case too.

Grandparents did all they could do but you know how kids are... I controlled them more then they me. Mom was a single raising two very rowdy kids so I lived with my Grandparents and she tried to handle my younger brother. it was a losing battle on both sides... so the drastic boarding school decision saved my life.

Sure wish I could tell my grandparents what a great job they did.

As a retired vocational shop teacher I can attest to the fact that most of the kids that choose that path do well. The shop teachers have a completely different relationship with the kids than an academic teacher does and all of the different fields of study are open to both sexes. Many times that is a great choice for a kid doeig poorly in school.
