Default Importing US Vehicle to Canada

Thanks Peter.
Congratulations on your new purchase.
All the hassle you had was because of the RIV Registrar of Imported Vehicle program. This is for vehicles of a certain age, and since your coach is newer than 15 years, you had this problem.
I have recently purchased a 88XXV and will not have to deal with a lot of the beauracracy - thank goodness.

I wrote and thanked Mr Vincent Richer for his help in rectifying the problems of importing an orphan vehicle and he informed me that another individual provided the information. Here's his reply to my email.

QUOTE What a pleasant surprise!

Just when I thought I was going to have to deal with another Bluebird import! Just kidding!

Vincent Richer

For your files, the information originated from our manager, Pierre Tremblay, Chief Vehicle Import and Audit Inspector at Transport Canada.UNQUOTE

When you buy a US private coach (not from a dealer) and you want to import it to Canada, how do you obtain a license plate to drive the coach to the border?

Most states have in transit type permits good for a certain period of time, or take a plate down with you, most provinces allow a time for registration after purchase.

Can I use the transit permit of a particular state to cross other states or do I have to get transits for each states I cross? How can you have a provincial plate if the vehicle has not yet go trough the process at the Canadian border?

If the plate stay on the coach after the sale, I guess it is not a valid one, is it? So I just have to drive quietly to the border . Right? Why thing are so complicated? There must be an easy way...
