Exclamation El Dash Inverter replacement on a 90SP

Just to wanted to provide experimenters with a little update. Wiring in additional inverters to emulate the factory wiring was not a success. I followed the process described in my previous post. First I wired in an additional inverter at position 4, energized the circuit and went back to having no EL at all. Disconnected from 4 and moved to position 2. Energized the circuit and had EL again but no better results than with one inverter. After about a minute a hasty disconnection of the circuit was necessary as the expensive magic blue smoke began to escape from inverter #1. Did manage to catch it quick. Went back to one and all was stable again. Something I have noted through the process. I am not getting a good full 120 voltage read off the inverter under load. I am reading in the range of 80 volts before and after the improvised hypot smoke test. I have done an additional 1 hour "burn in" ( I really have to do something about these puns)and all appears stable. A EEE friend of mine described a method we could use to test the individual panels as well as a method to do a controlled load test on the inverters themselves. In the mean time I am sure a little bit of something is better than all of nothing.

On my '83 FC the dash is two parts. The bottom panel, facing up, and the front panel facing back. I used one transformer for both, and it burned out. I replaced that with two cubes, one for the bottom and one for the upper half. It has worked fine ever since. The overhead panel is not electroluminecent on the '83.

The originals were wired in series, but logic tells me that two AC voltages in series is not a smart thing. It's ok for DC, but not for AC.

Default El Dash Inverter replacement on a 90SP

Thanks to some sound advice from Woody I cracked into the overhead for the first time. I found that long elusive front overhead load panel. It had one additional inverter cube mounted on it. It has now been replaced with a Dupree unit and I have EL on the overhead now. The switch console above the driver and the far right section of power gages have EL. The generator section and area around the Vac gage and Altimeter are still dark. Replaced 5 instrument lamps while I was in there too. Lot easier to read now.

Most likely. Carefully remove or get behind the panel and find two wires attached by a silicone substance. If there, the panel should light. If not, no. Be careful as the attachments are dainty. My coach has 4 inverters for two panels overhead; and one rheostat.

Something I noticed on my 90 was the tell tell pair of wires running off to the passengerside from the AC side of the inverter cube. It almost looked like it was installed as an afterthought. Mine had only one blue cube inverter for the overhead.
