Default What's this wire for?

While heading south on I-75 from Mackinaw I stopped at a rest park. Went inside and came back out and noticed some wires hangning down. I got underneath and found a sheathed set of wires dangling that go back to a Y set of wires. I couldn't tell where the rest went but the ones that were broken off seemed to lead to the front of the fuel tank. I thought it was the fuel gauge wires because there is some sort of unit on the front of the tank that seems to be missing the two wires that may have broken off. I went to the next exit and stopped at the Flying J and put about 60 gallons of fuel in and the guage moved. So, what is it? Any ideas?

Randy,

Does your idiot light for the water in fuel sensor work or is it unhooked?
Mine was unhooked because it malfunctions.
Does anyone know the part # for sensor?
I would guess it is more or less a generic sensor?????

the one in my 95 seems to work,at least the light is not on.
The 93 that I sold has had the light on for years.
I would never try to unscrew the old sender,i can see a diesel disaster in the works there!

Thanks guys. I didn't think it was anything critical to driving it home. Everything seemed to be working and so I thought I was ok. I feel better now about the rest of the trip home. I have never seen any kind of light or an alarm for the water in fuel go off. Of course I have several of the little green indicator lights that don't work. The switch that controls the light works whatever it is supposed to but some of the lights don't work. It would be nice if they all worked but that seems to be low on the priority list for me at this point. I will work on those when I have time. I will hook the wires back up when I get home. I know they were hooked up before because they never hung down like they did. I crawled under and taped them up to keep them from getting torn up. Thanks again.

That Water In Fuel light still shines brightly on freeNeasy Randy. Bothered me at first, but now find it is behind the steering column enough to not be of issue. I don't dare pulling that sensor, with the price of fuel the way it is.

Default Whats this wire for?

Rick:

My water in fuel light comes on every once in a while. Carried the bird to a friends Quick Oil Change store and drove over his pit. He opened the sump drain cock and no water came out. The Racor is fine (just changed 3 months ago) and the alarm has not gone off. Seems when I get below 1/2 tank of fuel, the light will come on. I'm going to a marina close by before I take my trip west and buy 16 oz of BroBor and put it in before I fill up. I'll see if that works, otherwise, I guess I'll just have to live with it. No doubt there's some moisture there but I don't think it is enough to worry about. Perhaps just some of the bird gremlins at work.
