Default NASA 747 Carrying the Space Shuttle Discovery

Nancy and I followed John & Susan Schmieder (another 91 Bird couple) down to Cocoa Beach Pier before sun rise Tuesday morning to watch the 747 with the Space Shuttle Discovery on it's back, fly down the coast, circle Patrick Air Force Base and come back up the coast.

I put a video on you tube - hand held, dim light and looking over top of the camera monitor so it's kind of shaky and out of focus at times but maybe you can still get a feel for what it was like.

That is pretty amazing when you think of all the engineering and aeronautics involved.

I would imagine that the first person who came up with the idea of flying a shuttle on the back of a 747 got some really strange looks at first...

Thanks for the video.

Probably a lot of "out of the BOX" thinking was the result of "out of the BONG" thinking...

John,

Thanks for posting the video. It still amazes me that an airplane of that size can get off the ground. And the orbiter alone is more than 120 feet long. THAT IS ABOUT THREE WANDERLODGES NOSE-TO-NOSE. The scale and level of engineering is just flat out unbelievable!!!

To see it first hand must have been a real treat.

That's a great idea - could winch a Westfalia on top of the Bird - would have to stay away from overpasses ...

BTW - I think the Wright bros first flight was less than 100 feet

The still picture attachment looked so much like the You Tube attachment that it was easy to miss so here it is again. It shows the chase plane better than the video does.

Thanks for sharing. One of the things on my bucket list was to see a shuttle launch but I guess that will never happen. What an amazing piece of American history.
