Default Carol wants me to tell this story.

At dinner tonight Carol asked me to tell the story of when we snuck into the Daytona speedway.
Well, its a little more story that that, and heres how it went.
It happened around 1980 or so.
We had this converted school bus and the 4th of July was coming up.
The Volusia County Speedway was having a $10,000 to win street stock race,so we built a camaro for the race,it was a 68 model, and i had put the cage and seat in it for a guy and they never paid me,so the cars in my yard.
WE built an engine and got the rearend geared up for the 1/2 mile clay track.

But,since the race was on the 4 day weekend we decided we needed to go race, and then end up at the Daytona Firecracker 400,as it was called back then.

So,the plan went something like this,we take the bus and the racer to Volusia raceway, win the $10,000 and send the car and trailer home with the driver,we would go to the Daytona speedway for the NASCAR race.
But,we had to get the bus into the speedway on Friday,i think.

That means we had to go from the Daytona speedway to the Volusia speedway at Barberville and leave the bus at the Daytona speedway, and then get back to the Daytona speedway to sleep and watch the race the next day.

A guy i worked with was going to Daytona with us,and we would use his new chevy wagon for transportaton.
My buddys would bring my racer over to Volusia for the race.

A couple of problems had to be overcome.
No dogs were allowed at Daytona, and i had a big mean german sheppard that had to come with us,my Mom would have kept him,but "Bud" was never happy away from me and Carol.
So,he has to go racing,somehow.

2nd problem, once you got in the Daytona track, you could not leave, unless you wanted to pay full price to get back in,except in emergency.

So,we have to sneak a dog in,then leave and get back in without paying.

Fast forward...

We have the bus in the speedway,we had tested the racer and it was fast enough to win.

So,we are in the Daytona infield,we head out to Volusia to race.
Going through the speedway tunnel the guy at the gate stops us,we have taken the bottom of the back seat in the chevy wagon out so we could hide Bud under the seat,so we could sneak him in and out.
Buds laying under there, all quiet, everything is fine.
Bernie tells the gate guy hes had a death in the family,we are taking him to the airport to fly home, the gate guy gives us 2 passes to get back in!
One for me,one for Carol.
The plan was,Carol would get under the back seat with Bud on the way back in,Bernie and i would be in the front seat.
The back seat would be folded down over Carol and Bud.
What could possibly go wrong?

So,we go racing,its a 100 lap race,at night,and its hot,and it humid.
The driver stays out of trouble,we are doing what we planned, run our race, stay clean, come in for fuel if theres a big crash and don't hurt the car.
Stay on the lead lap, keep the leader in sight.
Simple,right?

WE do pretty good, the car is good,no problems.
Around lap 70 we start to move up,picking the leaders off,one by one.
The track is rough,we are running street tires, thats the rule, all those skinny tires have cut the track to shreds.
Ruts, potholes, you name it,we are racing in it.
I think we are running maybe 3rd,or 4th,20 laps to go and coming out of turn 4 and about halfway down the front straight we hit a huge pothole,we shear off the left rear axl and the tire and axle go up,up,up into the air.
That tire and broken axle were higher than the track lighting, man,if it comes down in the pits or the stands, people are going to die.

The wheel and tire come down on the track, and finally stops.
The track crew gets us off the track and onto the trailer.

Meanwhile Bernie and Bud are sitting in his wagon on the outside of the track,Bernies drinking beer like its water.

The race gets over,Bernie drives into the pits, its maybe 2am.
WE drink a few beers and tell the crew goodnight, they are heading home,a long ride to Gainesville at 2am after racing all day.
And more than a few beers.

But,Bernies new wagon will not start,we jump it off and it runs, but if we turn the headlights on,the engine dies.

So,no way we are going to miss the 400 mile race the next day,so we drive up to the road out front ,hyway 40,turn left and Daytona is 25 miles of dark road.
So we sit and wait,i'm driving.
A car comes along heading our way and i jump out behind them, driving 50 feet off their bumper, using them as headlights.
The never knew we were drafting them.

I draft them all the way to I-95,then we jump on 95 heading south for maybe 12 miles,no headlights, but plenty of traffic so we can see OK.

People are flashing thier lights, yelling at me to turn on the headlights,we wave and continue on.

Well, since the battery is almost dead, the engine computer is not working so good and the Cat Converter is red hot, glowing red,you can see the ground from the reflection as we drive,NOT GOOD.

Carol was supposed to get under the back seat, with Bud.
But Carol is freaking out, turns out shes claustrophobic,so along hyway 92 i jump in the back seat,Bernie takes the wheel, all while moving,we are afraid to stop, the car may die.

Remember that red hot converter?
Well, the darn floor under the seat is so hot its almost smoking,i'm down ther holding Bud,hes not liking the heat,i'm not liking the heat,Bernies driving into the tunnel, the guy at the gate stops us and Bernie gives him the passes, but the guys telling Bernie his car is going to catch on fire, the ground is glowing from the red hot converter.
Bernies trying to explain, and about that time Bud gets away from me and jumps up,flipping up the back of the seat and there i am,on the floor, with a big dog.
The gate guys starts yelling something, and Bernie,he just floors it and away we go,through the tunnel and into the infield.
People all over the place, the Night race had just ended and everybody was drunk and yelling the car was on fire.
About that time,the car died....

We just know security is going to be all over us and Bernie convinces all these drunk guys to push the wagon to our camp!!
Security never did show up,i hit the shower and then the bed..

The next day we charged the wagons battery and Bernie left before the race was halfway over,so as not to get caught up in the huge traffic jam..

WE fixed the race car and ran it at a few races, and the next year we went back to Volusia and ran that $10,000 to win race again, with the same luck.
Broken axle...

But we never did sneak into Daytona again..

THe scary part is this is a true story.

All except the beer drinking part,we never did that!

Driving 25 miles on hyway 40 with no lights, stuck to the bumper of the car in front of you?
Using them for headlights, and as a deer warning?
Crazy...
