Default FC Low running voltage/Alternator Problem

Hi All,

My bus has recently developed a habit of occasionally not wanting to start without a boost from the generator. I have 4 new GC2 batteries installed in the original configuration, as starting and house batteries in one bank. Also, my dash voltmeter seems to run closer to 12v than 13v when the bus is cruising down the road, leading me to believe the alternator is giving up on me. When the bus is plugged in, the batteries charge up and the next start is instant.

I’d appreciate any advice or suggestions before I put a new “triple nickel” in the bus.

Thanks,

Trent

I just had the same exact problem how to replace the voltage regulator on the back of the alternator

Double check wire lug torque on the alternator outputs. Might be a simple faulty connection, (I sometimes space out something simple in the hunt for a fix.)

That and belt tension. I imagine the alternator small pulley surface area to get traction on the belts might make it more sensitive.

If everything is a-ok, new regulator I guess, or alternator assembly?? (no experience changing an FC alternator regulator yet for me, are they generally externally serviceable?)

If you just replaced your batteries check you cables and connections. Make sure they are all clean(clean the connections with some sandpaper, make them shine) and tight.

1: Gene’s comment mirrors my experience...years ago irregular charging required the replacement of the voltage regulator on our alternator. An easy fix.
2: The dash gauge is not accurate as wired by BB. You’re getting a reading down line from the ignition switch and a relay. For diagnostics read direct with hand voltmeter. Then try to fix any issues found.

Just dropped my alt off @ the rebuilder. Problem was not charging when first started until it warmed up and then started overcharging on our way home to Boston from Fla. I believe it is a bad regulator and alt shop agrees but having him check it out to make sure brushes etc are OK. It was several hours work to get it out and I don't want to leave anything to chance.

Thanks, All. I’ll start with the regulator per Gene’s experience. Does anyone have a part number handy?

Frank - thanks for the info on the voltmeter. I’ll rewire that gauge to come directly from the batteries with an ignition relay. Much appreciated.

It's a real bad bet to go with reman alternators or starters when new is affordable.

Thanks, Mike. I’ve got long arms so I’ll try swap the regulator first. If that solves it, I’ll pickup a new 555 and keep it with me until I open up the front. I read your thread with the rebuilt issues. New is definitely the way I’ll go.

I was able to tap on the regulator and the volts would increase. The volt meter on my bus is extremely accurate.and stock all blue bird. I thought it was not correct until I figured it out. The regulator was slowly going south, kinda fooled me.
