Default High Mileage?

In doing some tire kicking of available coaches, a thought occurred: Is there a high (or too low) mileage number for a DD Series 60 or Cummins 450/500 HP engine? And the Allison transmission? I don't know anything about the Allisons' model reliabilty yet. To me, based on what I have learned about these coaches, a unit that has a couple hundred thousand miles, if properly maintained, might be as good a find as a unit that has fifty thousand miles. Does that make sense or am I out to lunch and low miles is what I should prefer?

I'm sure someone a lot smarter than I am will be along shortly to answer, but here's my take.

History and documentation are much more valuable than just numbers. Sitting is not good. You don't keep your racehorse in the barn for years then take it straight to the track and expect it to win.

You'll never come across a diesel motorhome with too many miles.

Saw one last summer with 800,000 (PT 38) Sat right behind him my coach has 150,000 If I was buying I can honestly tell you as nice as mine is the other was clearly nicer. It's all about who the PO was and how he cared for the bus.

Lots of early trans and engine rebuilds which seems to support the idea that sitting hurts them.

Ditto, they were built to drive.

Thanks for the responses, that's about what I have thought, mileage isn't an indicator of unsuitableness(?) for purchase.

If you had three identical coaches one with real low miles one with medium miles and one with high miles which for the sake of discussion would be the one to buy? For the discussion a mid eighties PT's one with 30k one with 120k and one with 250k all things equal only difference is miles (I know this would never happen) but just for giggles what would you buy? I am suggesting the low mileage one may be the one NOT to buy and the one with 250 might be ??? Anyone want to offer opinions. All things being equal. Don't say one best maintained we're going to just talk relative to miles. Maybe all the same?

mileage is just one factor to look at. And it would be low on my priority list.

I agree with Mallie.

And I am glad that the conclusion that mileage is not that important because I am pushing 200,000 miles after last year's trips.

I have averaged about 10,000 a year for the last 6 years.
