1) My alternator gauge pulsates wildly on startup and then settles down as the voltage gets up toward 14V
2) I have the old Transpo D443 regulator
3)I should run a wire directly from the exciter terminal on the regulator to the + side of the battery
4) I should run another wire from the ground terminal on the regulator to the - terminal on the battery and a third wire from the ground terminal of the regulator to mounting bolt of the altinator.
If none of this works I should order a replacement CN D698-186612V regulator.

Please let me know if I've got this right before I blow anything up
I can't help on the wiring, but Mark Bragdon has a regulator for sale.

Your combiner solenoid may be bad. I ended up replacing the old Voltage regulator with a newer 5 wire. My problem started with a bad combiner solenoid. The spiking voltage burnt up my regulator. You can pull the Hot lead off alternator , and run bus with GEN power to if necessary.

I'm a little confused. Is this silver thing that looks like a relay the combiner solenoid?
One wire from the regulator goes to the alternator and the other 2 go to this "thing". Should I look at replacing this before looking at the regulator?
Should I add the extra lines from the regulator to the batteries as noted above?
I need sum clarity on this as I don't want to make things worse.

Combiner solenoid is on the bulk head on curb side above the shunts. Also look at the diagram for wire locations for voltage regulator.
