I know most of you guys are too young to remember that batteries were made from some kind of rubber material and they would "leech"(sp) through, on concrete, like tires do, thus sapping the power. You also put a penny on the positive side, near the terminal, to act as a sacrifice for the acid that was emitted, rather than the terminal post being eaten.
