Caterpillar 3208 Solutions This sub-forum is hosted by Mike Hohnstein who has been at this kind of thing for 50+ years now, guess I'm addicted. The saga has been all about progressively larger shop space since then. Honestly, never wanted to get into the CAT 3208's that were originally considered to be a throwaway engine but that's all that works in a FC in my world. Same thing with my Ford toter, that came with a NA, too much effort to hang in a 6, so been at it with the CAT V-8 for 20 years now. In reality you can get excellent life out of a CAT 3208 if it's built correctly. Post your questions about the CAT 3208 engines here and Mike will try to help you out.

Default Oil Pan Corrosion 3208TA

Hi All,
I had noticed some rust on my oil pan and finally got around to removing the insulated shield covering it. I’m not sure if all 3208 Buses have this shield but there’s only 4 bolts holding it in place and it may warrant inspection for others. As you can see from the photos, my shield had what appears to be fiberboard as insulation with the backing against the oil pan. This apparently held moisture in contact with the oil pan. I don’t know if the fiberboard was factory installed but it was well-cut and fitted.
After removing the old stuff I treated the corrosion with Ospho (phosphoric acid), brushed, sanded, and with follow up with POR 15. I’m using un-faced fiberglass insulation during reassembly. The integrity of the oil Pan seems to be intact but I will probably replace the pan once I find one.

Get an oil leak and it won't rust. Is that insulation heat rated to 200F? Fresh paint always looks good!

Man, I hope so! I’ve had a lot of engine fires but only in jets...
