David,

Checkout this thread for pics of finished Express coaches. I believe San Diego MTS is still using them.

I don't think they are stainless. Is your chassis stainless, it looks painted? The 450 stainless coaches weren't painted.

Thanks...lots of info in the link.

ummm, I think the upper portion is "Stainless" and the lower bay section is not.

BUT, That 1 Wanderlodge that was already chopped up.... They thought they were going to make a killing for all the "stainless steel" but the metal shop rejected it and said it wasn't real stainless steel. They said it was such a low grade stainless that there was only a hint of stainless in it. It wasn't worth anymore than regular steel.

This picture at the factory is from October, 2008. I think these two may have still been there at the auction. Note the different looks of the fronts.

Frankly,

I think you're better off with steel - easier to fix, drill, weld, and possibly less prone to cracking. I know the stainless frames were a ferritic 400 series stainless. I always thought they used 409. Anyone know for sure? When welding stainless, I'm told that you should backfill the tubes with argon - it's doubtful that BB did this - owners have complained about pin holes and rusty welds. Anyone know if BB argon backfilled, pickled, or passivated?

Here's a pic of how the Expresses were assembled. I prefer this construction technique since it results in long uninterrupted longitudinal frame members. Yours is built this way and so were the M380's; the M450's and the Premier XL's were different, they were fully welded:

hmmmm, That coach in the background looks like the newer style like mine. But my front turn signals are up higher on the face. I like the front bumper of the older coach though

Hello David G,

Very cool project!

There were only two Wanderlodges listed for the Auction (item #66 and item #67) and I only saw those two at the factory. The less complete Wanderlodge (item #67) had some slide rooms stacked beside it but neither of the Wanderlodges at the auction had any slide out rooms installed. Also an HWH Rep told me that they bought their slide mechanisms back to recoup some of their losses.

I attached a few pictures from the Auction (some are kind of fuzzy). The first three picture are of the complete transit bus. The next six pictures are of the two Wanderlodges.

Best of luck with your project.

Thanks for the pics and links...I found some good useful info in all that.

There is a missing Wanderlodge somewhere LOL
I can't explain anymore than what they have told me, and the parts I have seen.
I most definetly saw 2 Wanderlodges 2 weeks ago first hand, they are parked right beside my coach, and they told me 1 was destroyed. (the 2 coachs could very well be the ones in these pic's) Either way....It's sad to see this happen to our favorite coach company. It really is a shame.

Wasn't that completed "express" coach a 2006/07 model?
They still had a brand new 06/07 model at the auction?
