Default Dreaded Project (Front end body mask removal)

I been putting off removing the clear mask on the front of my coach ... it needs to go ...so here I go. If you are contemplating doing the same, don't be deceived in thinking your going to peel up a corner and just pull it off, not after 10 years in the sun your not. that would be to easy.

Anyway here's a couple of pictures I took along the way that may help, maybe someone has a better idea. I took about an hour and 1/2 to remove the center section. It certainly beats taking it to a body shop where most would look at it and say "that needs to be repainted" $$$$$$.

If the mask pulls the paint off with it, which is certainly a possibility, than a repaint will be in your future. So consider that before starting

BTW: anybody have a good source for a good heavy mask. I have one I got off ebay pretty cheap but it looks too thin for me. 3M has some good mask, any other sources would be appreciated.

Thanks
OH yea, and by the way ... take it slow removing it, you wont have a choice.

I have often considered these masks but of course get scared away by some HORROR stories. Your coach looks great! I have sprayed some cars we have built, not a proffessional but i have the equipment, I have often contemplated 3 or 4 coats of clear coat. My assumption is clear coat is very tough and if it gets scratched up you could buff it back or a light sanding and apply a coat or two and you would be brand new again, do any of the experts out there have an opinon on the feasability of such folly, Thanks Robert

Slim,

Something I have used is Klean-Strip Aircraft Decal & Adhesive Remover. It won't harm cured automotive paints, and softens up the decal as well as the adhesive. I would think it would work on these vinyl masks the same way.

Here's one outlet for it:

Looks great Slim. When I bought my coach from Parliament, they replaced the 3M on the front. You might check with them to see what they use.

Slim, Are you sure you want to put that stuff back on your coach? A clothing steamer also works to get the film soft, but the adhesive is a pain to get off, Still working on mine, progress is very SLOW. Kurt

Here is a page with several different adhesive removers that are a bit less volatile than paint reducers.
I have used both the orange peel and rapid remover with good results. I used the orange peel product to get the adhesive off my bus from the striping before we had it painted. The "Vinyl Off" product is one that I have not used, but it also is supposed to take off both the vinyl as well as the adhesive and contains no harmful ingredients.

I was thinking about a clear covers to protect the clear coat which is easily chipped but know I'm thinking that touch up paint and clear is a better solution. Anybody have other solutions?
