Default Tag Axle Misaligned / Cracked Welds

last October I had another blowout of a tag tire which I now believe to be from uneven wear. When that tire blew I also noticed a brand new shock was destroyed. I assumed the broken shock was collateral damage from the tire. Now I am not so sure.

Today I drove the coach to a local tire place that services big trucks to get a professional alignment. While I was waiting I happened to notice that the curb side tag shock did not look right so I went out to take a closer look. It is busted in half. The shop said they wont do an alignment until the shock is replaced. So I left and will be ordering yet another shock in the morning.

When looking down the side of the coach the tag axle seems to be sticking out just a little farther than the drive axle on the drivers side. When I parked the coach this afternoon I ran down the jacks and slide under behind the tag to have a look see. I noticed the drive shaft is not centered in the tag axle tube cutout. Was it ever? I don't know. I also noticed that the part of the axle that holds the bottom of the airbag which is welded to the axle tube has broken welds all the way around on the drivers side. That section is still held in place by a metal saddle that is welded across the top. I hope some of the pics I took make sense to some of you guys.

This is what I know for sure - The coach had broken shocks on the tag when I bought it. Both sides. The new shocks I purchased have also broke. I have blown two tag tires. One on each side. The previous owner had at least one tag tire replaced. Reasons unknown to me but one tire was a different brand than all the others when purchased. The tag has broken welds in one spot that looked to have been repaired previously. However, all other welds look fine. Tag axle could be shifted towards the drivers side.

I am thinking this repair will be beyond the scope of the tire shop I went to today. What type of shop should I be looking for and does anyone have any recommendations in the south GA north FL area?

As much as I hate to even consider the cost, might I need to be looking for a new axle assembly?

Ohh boy.
Thats a mess, broken welds, birdcrap welds, and it looks like the axle or the trailing arm has shifted over or something.
Is this a lifting axle or ?

And,i remember long ago a problem with shocks that were too short or too long on a lift axle coach that resulted in broken shocks.

Lifting axle and the guy at Koni assured me these were the only shocks provided to BB for the tag axle of the LXi. I ordered 2 of their 8805 1010. Both have now broke.

Randy, Didn't you mention you knew where I could get an axle assembly?

I thought it was a lift axle.
The guy at Koni is wrong.
There was a problem with shocks on the lift axle, too short or too long,i can't remember which, the shocks would break and the shock mounts compromised.
At least one coach had the issue,BB would not repair it under warranty.
The owner of the coach with the issue is no longer an owner, but the coach is in Colorado.

Ohh,FYI,there was 3 axle options on the LXI.
Liftable
Steering
Dead axle.
Each one used a different shock.
So 3 different shocks.

You might contact Josam's in Orlando. They do heavy equipment chassis work and are the best at alignment.

It ether went to Day Brothers in London, KY or to Visone Auto Mart
East Bernstadt, Ky. I saw it listed as having parts for sale on one of their sites, a year or so ago.

Google for their web page.

Thanks Ron, I will be down there in a month or so in the coach. I'll bring it by there if I haven't found a repair facility closer before my trip to Orlando.

I do know there are a few Birds in salvage yards and I will contact them if it become necessary. I would rather repair the one that is already under the coach if possible.
