Your impression would be wrong. Many 8V and 6V Detroit engines are equipped with Jacobs engine brakes. The V8 cats did not have a true jake but did have a Thelma drive line retarder marketed as a Jake.

Thinking back to my drive home last week. We hit the biggest hills going from Johnson City Tn to Asheville, about 80F outside. Grades were 7-8% up and down. Engine water never went above 195-200, Engine oil 220-240. Transmission temp only rose downhill with the retarder on. I generally would hit the fan override as soon as I saw what I had coming.

My only concern was EGT- which would run up to 1100 in not too much time at all. It few times I was down to 15-20 mph to keep the pyro down. It also seemed that the bus was happier (and kept the pyrometer temperature down) when I locked 2nd out of the ZF to keep the RPMs around 2200-2300 instead of lugging in D with the RPMs 1800-2000. Driving up in D was making the transmission hunt more, too. I wasn't a fan of shifting up and down on the same grade.

Am I doing anything wrong or anything I should be checking into? It just seems like a bad idea to sustain 1000+ degrees EGT while everything else seems fine.
