Could be, but water only cools if it is evaporating, and that's not always true in still air. So you might have boiled instead of baked!

A lot of places where heat is a problem are also dry - the towel might not stay wet.

All true Don but I guess that was her only backup since she didn't have auto gen or other choices

The problem is the in rush current needed to start the compressor. Thats some where around 25 amps or more, than the unit will settle down to 5-10 amps to run. You might be able to fudge enough by dissconnecting the batteries appliances etc. and get the second one started but you will have the same problem when the system cycles again.

We replaced a manual Fan-Tastic with a themostatically controlled model. This fan
moves amost 1,000 cubic feet of air per minute, hopefully enough to protect the interior from extreme heat in the event of AC shutdown. Now that we have hot weather I can see how well this cools the interior before our next outing.

With One Thousand cfm(!), don't let the animals get near the fan. They'll be sucked up and blown outside!!!!
