Just wanted to ad this to the electric heater idea. I made up an electric heater this winter to install in my loop for the Primus. I used a EGR cooler from a VW TDI and gutted it to install a 1500 watt element into.
I used it this winter as a test and to help with some freeze protection. I had a electronic thermostat in the heater with a 1500 watt element in place of the rear Primus loop With the electric fans turned off the highest water temperature I could make with was 130° with the outside temperature at between 28 and 32°. If the outside temperature was up in the 50s and the sun shinning on the bus it would hit 162°. I will be making another and series them with 1200 watt units. One off each leg in the power panel. Oh and I also found the wire from the front Primus control panel to turn it on and off from the controller for the final installation.

Today I removed Silver Shadow's starter ( 8V92 ). Easily disconnecting the ground and power cables because I had recently replaced the power cable and spruced up the grounds got me off to a good start.
I figured out the size ( 5/8 ) needed to remove the starter mounting bolts and learned that at least the bottom easy to reach one was able to be broken loose easily with a 1/2" drive breaker bar. Having read about the heavy starter and difficulty for one person to remove or install it, I moved my floor jack into position and discovered that it was about 8" too short. I was also concerned with the starter wobbling off of the jack's swivel plate. I decided to build an extension for the jack that would cradle the starter between some angle irons. I proceeded to cut and weld some material I had laying around and came up with a device that fits into the hole on my floor jack where the swivel plate goes ( thats what I am calling the part that touches whatever one is using the jack on ) and reaches up to the starter with the jack a little less than fully extended. ( this is with the wheels blocked about 3 1/2 " up off the ground. After too much welding I got the starter out with no problems. It did slip off my jig, but I was holding on to it and was able to keep it from falling - more of a slightly controlled slide to the ground. After I clean up the starter I will mark it's center of balance and jack jig safe area for next time. I will add info and pictures to the thread I started in the PT specific issues forum. All in all a successful day - only 8 hours to do a 45 minute job! ( but I did get a new tool and hours of welding practice out of the deal - my first weld looked not so hot - been over a year since I welded 1/4" plate - so I decided to weld all the seams 23 welds, I think ! I needed the practice and achieved a noticeable improvement in the results. Tomorrow I will start cleaning underneath with the intention of replacing leaking oil lines and compressor coolant hoses. I will also clean up my starter jig and take pictures of it if anyone else wants some welding practice. I may post a thread with pictures strictly on starter removal / replacement including tool sizes etc.

Keep on keeping on!
Several guys have built fixtures for holding the starters,a good plan because you can get hurt if a starter gets away from you.

I had much joy watching that old starter flop to the ground unimpeded. 39MT bolted in with minimal swearing.

At the bottom of the toodoo list on the 31, changed the engine oil pan and pick up to the 5 gallon model, did the caster adjustment, added a true steer thing, replaced the LP tank main valve, replaced yet another water pump idler, seal failed on latest overseas sourced bearing spraying grease after 1500 miles. Try the Cat bearings one more time, oh well. Any how fire up the engine, hear a slight ticking that follows rpm. Back it out side, think I'm paranoid, climb under, feel the pan, yup sumpin's not right in there.
Back in the shop, young ones are gone home, air jacks under frame, up it goes, drain and drop the pan, problem is evident. Chose to use a flange bolt on the support strut, JUST enough hex to contact a connecting rod nut, witness marks verify. All better now, just have to find the LP leak inside and we'll be good to go......I hope. Planning on driving to the capitol Friday, to let the Gov know what I think about him, shoe polish on the bird with witty comments.

I just put a 50MT back in with a new solenoid by hand. It only weighs 73 pounds. It felt like 125. Those are not light and kinda scary if you slip.
Worst part is I have to remove it again to replace the solenoid for the second time. I made 4 cranking cycles with a new Napa solenoid and the contacts burned together or something stuck. I am sure it was not stuck engaged because it was not trying to turn the motor over. Just spinning the starter motor. Hopefully my son will be around and I will use him as the starter removal jack. Lol
