Thumbs up

The cruise on my bird is at times not working either. It engages fine but as you hit bumps in the road it sometimes goes dead. I've had the CC system checked out at Bleakley Unadilla and they tell me that the sensor on the hub is coming loose? All I know is the speedometer seems fine. So they fix it and by the time I hit VA on the ride home it starts up again. It's frustrating if you love to use CC! The past two trips through Unadilla I've had to stop to get it fixed. They tell me I probably need a new hub? Don't know if they are correct or not.

Dick I really appreciate you doing this trial because maybe that's where my problem lies. I have to pencil that in on my TO DO LIST....

Default Mike Hohnstein throttle Modification

Here is a modified throttle control that Mike Hohnstein has designed for his 'Bird, I don't know if this would work in the same application as is being discussed here, the pictures are not the best but you can probably understand what Mike's description is all about.

Quote:
The "RIG" I made up to transfer motion to the pump throttle arm with out angular load to the pump arm. The front shaft is connected to the pump with a short link making all loads parallel. Front shaft is an original Ford truck part, the spur gears and counter shaft were added to provide the attachment points for the foot pedal, cruise control and modulator/trans cables. It works pretty good, however it is about 1/4" too wide as the engine cover had to be dimpled for the gears to clear. When in reverse the engine would rotate enough to stick the throttle, pretty exciting the first time that happened.
Mike Hohnstein

Dan,

There could be several issues with the cruise & the high idle. One being this throttle cable hanging up. Read Dick's lubricating technique.

Also the cylinder in the picture can be removed and lubed, there is a rebuild kit available. Then there is the rheostat ( the blue part at the end of the cylinder), this is the only other part available, but it is pricey.
In addition there are air solenoids that can be troublesome. There is not a lot of experience with this Bendix system. Sounds like guess work is going on with your problem.
It is best to review, what has been posted, and become somewhat familiar with the Bendix schematics, and air plumbing.

Austin Gibbons contributed some of the ZF material too, I just downloaded it into the database and added it to the links section.

Hi Dan,
I saw your post about the cruise problems, and every time I see an intermittent problem with these coaches, especially about 85 and up, I tend to know the Amp connectors BB used in the wiring harnesses have lots of connection problems, and anytime you have a problem like this you need to open the front and check all the round black wire connectors out front and under the dash ,unscrew and seperate the connectors and inspect with a light to see that all the pins in the connectors are the same level, some locations may not have wires in them and be just open holes but if the pin is there it mat be backed out of the hole and not making good connection with the socket or the socket may be pulled out too , Ive learned over the years to check these connectors first, you may fix things you didnt know weren't working
