I can't say for your Onan but the gas 6.5 Onan I had in my SOB was reliable if run with some frequency.
In addition, the more load on the generator, within limits of coarse, the better it regulated engine speed and voltage. I would be hesitant to adjust the engine speed as I found my gas Onan throttle was touchy. Once moved it was difficult to get it where I wanted it. Also the A/C frequency would adjust with the throttle. Have you checked the Onan manual? I seem to remember with no load the Onan would read a rather high voltage. Once a load was applied it ran better.
