What is the cost of replacing the head gasket now vs the cost of an overhaul if fails and takes some more important parts with it? Sometimes peace of mind is worth the cost.

I sold my 380 back during the seeming rash of the head gasket failures that caused the entire engine to need overhauling. I never had a problem but it was a variable in my decision to let it go.

The cost to replace the HG is $3,700, barring any other significant items that need attention. I told them to consider any other items they come across during the work.

If the HG blows, then there is likely other damage that results in much more cost.

If you have the head gasket replaced, insist on using new head bolts rather than reusing existing. Cummins' procedures in their mechanics manual allow the reuse of head bolts that haven't stretched beyond their limit. You may want to investigate higher strength head bolts available from other sources although a Cummins shop will probably resist that idea.

I will do that, on both counts!

Cummins will install owner parts, but in that case, they won’t warranty the work, always a gotcha with Cummins.
