Those who are more knowledgeable will no doubt have to correct me on this.

The 8.2L is a 4 stroke. That would put it as its own category, pretty much an 8V62 if you could use that nomenclature to describe it. Somewhere between the 8V53 and the 8V71. I believe it had some type of floating cylinder (not sleeve) design that gave it high pressure (blown head gasket) problems and it suffered from low power.

Like I said, the experts will have to set me straight on what I have wrong here.

Default School Buses

The 8.2L Detroit was used in a good number of school buses, including Blue Bird. In fact, my school district has one they purchased used to use for air brake driving tests because the rest of our fleet is hydraulic. They are underpowered. If I'm not mistaken, they were not turbo'ed. I have seen some people put a turbo on them. I'm not sure of the results. They were also known as a smoker.

I have had the privilege and fun to be around such engines as the DDC/MTU 4000 series V16 mining truck engines. The YouTube video is one I made with my digital camera while visiting Barrick GoldStrike mine in Carlin Nevada. The mine truck is a Komatsu 930E. The engine drives a very large AC alternator to power the electric traction motors mounted in the rear wheels. You will hear the engine start up. Then it 'lopes" as the ECM tests the cylinders for even firing (misfiring). Then it smooths out.
