Default Racor ATF top up?

I've read when replacing the Racor filter some top off with ATF. Does this just mix and dilute in the diesel fuel? Is this the preferred procedure? Any ATF? More exhaust smoke for a bit?
Thanks!

The AFT is from a clean container. Very hard to keep diesel clean when pouring from container to container. Any type AFT will work. When your engine starts it dilutes the AFT in the filter. I have never noticed any smoke on start up. I have used this procedure for years. Hope this helps.

I've used ATF in the spin-on secondary filter for years. It gets really diluted when sent through the injection system. The Racor can be topped off with diesel or ATF, as long as you don't get any diesel into the center hole while filling the filter assembly. Fuel that goes down the hole bypasses the filter element. With ATF, you don't have to be as careful, but it gets a little expensive filling with ATF over diesel.

I topped off my genny racor with atf, also filled the genny fuel filter with atf. It smoked- but as soon as it burnt all the atf- all is good

So once the new filter is in place just pour in the ATF so the reservoir is full? Wont the ATF flow into the center hole? How much ATF should i have with me?

what is really important- if you use diesel or atf- fill that puppy to the brim, get some paper towels and put the lid back on- with the new O rings. If fluid runs out while inserting the lid, wipe it off and there will be no air issues. start the engine and get on the road

The center hole usually protrudes a little higher than the filter. I just cover the filter element with fuel/ATF and lubricate the o-ring on the bottom of the lid. Don't overfill- there's no benefit to having fuel much higher than the filter pleats- that's the only way it can get to the engine.

The nice thing about this is the ATF is clean with no particles that could cause any issues or plugs. So it's safe to use filtered or not. Diesel fuel in some open container is not really clean and can contain unfiltered particles.

The other nice thing is that you only have to carry two oils if you play your cards right. I carry only 15w-40 oil for the engine, and Dextron ATF. I use the ATF in the power steering, Tranny, hydaulic levellers, and all my fuel filters when changed. Keeps life simple, I can handle that.
