Question Caterpillar 3208NA Motor Mounts R&R

I have at least one of the motor mounts broken on my '82FC35RB 'Bird powered by a Caterpillar 3208NA and I'm thinking of just replacing all of them as I'm not sure how long the one mount has been broken and how much stress has been placed on the others. When I look at the engine I only see three mounts, one in front and two on the sides. When I contacted BlueBird Parts today I was told that there was two in the front and two in the rear, which I'm assuming is the sides. Has anybody changed out any of these motor mounts on their Cat 3208NA?

Yeah, I have. You need big air gun, big sockets and a bottle jack. Change one at a time. You have to romove the engine cover of course. Mounts are on either side of the engine bell housing and one at the front cross member.

John,

All my busses, 63 Bluebird, 82 School Bus Parts, and 78 Wanderlodge all have 3 mounts. One on each side of the Tranny Bell housing and one in the front center. They are a BEAR to replace so plan on scarred knuckles and grease!

Seems like they were some kind of Phord truck part.

Doesn't it seem rather odd that BB says there are 4 mounts when clearly there are only three? Who's answering these types of questions? Seems like it might be a waste of time to even contact BB if this is the best they can do. Or is it just a matter of not being interested. I don't think John's question about engine mounts would be all that complicated for a fellow with just the most rudimentry information.

i don't need to protect those good old boys at BB,but the techs at BB did not do engine work or repairs, they send all that out to the cat house or to Detroit/cummins.
so,they may not know the exact motor mount setup that just may be different from model to model of coachs.

and,if i remember correctly(i have done engine work on birds) on the 3208s theres a mount on each side of the flywheel housing,a round rubber hockey puck mount.
and on the front of the engine under the balancer theres a mount, some engines require 2 of the hockey pucks side X side,so that would be 4 hockey pucks on an engine.
other engine use a wide one peice rubber mount in the front.
so,there is many different setups for mounts, never assume they are all the same.

I talked to Glenn Rogers yesterday and he is going to do a followup on the motor mounts for me, but he was in agreement that there should only be three motor mounts on an FC, he said that there was an FC currently parked at the NEST and he would double check by taking a look at it and then let me know what his results are. The parts guy that I talked to is new so I will take that into consideration. I also have New York Bus Sales Parts looking into it for me.

John: Randy's right...on my 89 FC there are 2 rubber biscuit type mounts on the front of the engine, below the harmonic balancer, about 10 or so inches apart. The BB parts folks are correct. Go to the Ford truck dealer and ask for a set of mounts for an L8000 truck and see what that setup looks like.

Default NEW MOTOR MOUNTS INSTALLED

Here is what Randy and his helper Glenn finally did to get the new rear motor mount biscuits installed.....first I'm sure that there was a reason why my ears were burning, but after cutting out one of the old biscuits that had deformed and spread out somewhat, I made the trip down to Raneys Truck parts in Ocala, FL. and Gregg the parts man matched the old rubber biscuit up with one for a Mack truck engine, that is a little smaller in diameter and had to be trimmed a little, (I will let Randy describe what he did there) but after installing it into the mount itself and letting the weight of the engine compress it, the biscuit popped right into the hole that it was supposed to fit into. The part number for the rubber biscuit is ISOLATOR KCM 20QL324M.

The new mounts also raised the exhaust pipes up off of the front suspension frame work, so this should also quiet things down even more, now I may have to stop every so often and get out to listen to make sure the engine is still running

There were some folks that were at RATS that thought that they heard some piston slap when my 'Bird was sitting in the drive idling, that turned out to be the Horton air clutch fan that is very noisy and rattles when the engine is at idle, according to the people at Horton this is normal and you can hear the trucks at the truck stop during the summer that are sitting with the air conditioner running, make the same noise. When the Horton fan is turned off, it sounds just like any other Cat 3208NA according to Randy.
