Default Help with air throttle

We fired up the Bird, after not running it for about two months,
and we have no foot throttle acceleration.

Our 88 FC has a Williams air control foot throttle.
And a Bendix Cruise Controll.

Both the foot throttle and the cruise control, share the same air throttle cylinder.
This air cylinder with the attached cable to the injection pump, works great,
for the high / low idle, that is set by the Resume/Set switches on the Bendix Cruise.
The foot brake also lowers the idle.

It appears that the Cruise control is out of the circuit
when turned "Off". And the cruise worked great on our last trip.

So, is there a check valve or air solenoid switch in the air plumbing between
the air supply and the foot throttle?? Where is it located???

Any help or ideas are needed and welcome.

I was able to get some information from the drawings, that Ralph has in the files.
But these seem to be for a 6V or 8V and may be different than our FC.

Hi Bill,

Contact Mike Hohnstein - he has been through my system thoroughly and can probably offer some suggestions.

If I can help by looking for something on mine, let me know and I will look.

Default Vroom, Vroom

Vroom, Vroom, What a Happy Sound.

Late model FC's and many 6V's and 8V's have the Bendix Cruise
Control, which also incorporated the air treadle foot throttle.

There are ten, valves, these include, inversion valves,
reducing valves, check valves, double check valves and solenoid
metered orifice valve switches. .
The electronic module gets input from the ignition, air brakes,
park brake, speed sensor, cruise, resume and set controls.
The reason for the above description, is the fact that the Bendix
is no longer supported, and it is a very complex system.

If an owner has trouble or problem , I would suggest evaluating
a complete updated replacement unit,
Although the Bendix is a very reliable system, information
to repair and trouble-shoot is rare and hard to find. The wiring
and the numerous copper tubing lines are very difficult to trace.
Parts are not in stock and difficult to locate.

Fortunately, I was successful in repairing our no foot throttle
acceleration problem, But many phone calls and trouble shooting
hours were needed. Our problem was a 12V solenoid that controls
air pressure flow.

I would like to thank Forum members Ralph, Mike H. and Dick Gideon
for their advice, phone calls, and help.
Most important, I want to thank Jesse and Chris, at BlueBird for their
time and effort in fax/e-mailing the much needed schematics and the
plumbing drawings.

Bill,

I was waiting to read that you had to call in a heart surgeon to repair a heart valve, but that was the only valve that you didn't mention

Bill: I'm so 'glad' you had this problem with the treadle pedal air throttle this past year. Your troubleshooting skills led me to a recent 'fix' on my late model FC. The same 'no foot throttle' problem happened to me a few days ago after squirting some CRC heavy duty silicone spray lube into the Bendix solenoid assembly and the Allenair solenoid pilot valve, (bad idea).

Anyway I restored the air throttle operation by replacing the Allenair solenoid valve inside the cruise control system black box (drivers side behind bank of 4 batteries). Air throttle and cruise control is now smooth as silk and the new metric cable from Midwest Control Products Inc http://www.midwestcontrol.com/push-pull-cables.php is working great. Thanks for the help and thanks to all who make this forum work.

The Allenair solenoid valve is a 3-way, normally open, 1/4" ports, 12VDC.

Allenair part number 3OBY4A G 12VDC $46.67 plus shipping.

It make one feel good, when others are helped by an old posting.
It is good to hear that you solved your throttle problem, & your Bird is up and running again.

It is better news that someone (Dick Gideon) has found a supplier for the obsolete, elusive, & mysterious, metric threaded throttle cable.

This thread should be of special interest to older PT, SP, & FC owners, with mechanical injection pumps and Bendix air throttle / Cruise control.

Okay, we now have a supplier for metric cable. But why do we NEED metric cable?

And which air throttle is recommended for older FC's? Who's a good supplier, or are they widely available?

I want to convert to air a.s.a.p. My mechanic is ready to go for it. I just want to tap into this group's collective wisdom as to my best choice, and URL's for the most helpful threads if they're available without extended searches.

Hi Jack,

Read this thread, Crit & Gardner have converted to air throttle, then consider King Cruise.
