Default Starter on the bench

As part of my pm program the starter is out and I am looking for some advice. It was working just thought it was dragging and being 22 years old time to come out.
There is a local rebuild shop with great reputation and another one in Little Rock. Will get prices today on rebuilding.
A friend on the forums with otr trucks advises buy a new one. I like that idea but need a source.
Engine is a Cummins M11.
Starter is Delco Remy, 42MT, 12v, CW, 11 tooth. Part #1046 1052.
Any advice appreciated.

Since its still working its not in bad shape, so rebuilding is not a bad way to go, usually involves a good cleaning and replacing the brushes. Your local shop can advise you if different if its not cost effective and you can then order a gear reduction starter.

Chances are if you buy a "new one" it will be someone else's that has been rebuilt. If it's really "new" it will likely be a lower quality than the 20 year old one you have.
I agree with Andy. Clean it up replace brushes and bushings/bearings.

I think this is a good idea. These things only have one way to start. Starter failure will park you.

Hey Guys, you can buy new ones for not much more money.
The gear reduction starters are a deal.
Paul,if you want a place to get one (UPS involved) call G&M in Dothan Al.
Mention my name,it can't hurt!
I buy new in the box stuff from them all the time.
I have a new (not rebuilt) starter in my parts bay along with a new alternator.
The boys at G&M are a family owned business, they are brothers and grew up in this shop, which was ther dads shop.
Great guys, and the inventory is excellent.
They also do rebuilds, but think about that, they can rebuild your stuff, but some of its still going to be 25 years old.
On a daily driver, maybe, but on a coach that you may be 1000 miles from home?
Not for me!

Ohh,they sell new Delco,not chicom.

A spanking new 39MT is $250-350 all over the place. Or go to a truck shop and get a used one for $150. Either way you're money ahead and an improvement in starting power.

Here's a new one for $272 shipped on ebay: 39mt on ebay

Beware, most listings out there are for chicom knockoffs of the 39MT and are not the same thing!

Just as Larry Kehler about the chicom starters!
Once while in alaska one of our group needed a starter,we bought a new delco at the detroit dealer for cheap money, they had a sale going on,we bought 2 the deal was so good!
WE had to drive a long way to get it,but it was cheaper than calling a road angel!

Mine takes a 42MT Type 4000 Right hand rotation with part # ST2002-03 or 195830 according to Cummins Quickserve

Is the 39MT the gear reduction replacement?

Is "Right Hand" rotation clockwise or counterclockwise?

Answered my own question:
http://www.delcoremy.com/find-a-part...ref/104/195830

According to Delco website 8200308 39MT is the correct replacement for the 195830 that my engine came with.
