Based upon my unfathomable depths of knowledge of all things marine, I think that a marine rubber exhaust flapper would work. When new the flap would be up against the round opening (which is not vertical on our birds) thus keeping all rain at bay. When it gets older it would hang straight down and keep most of the rain out. When much older it would fall off which would be it's way of indicating that it needs replacing.

There are many manufactures of these. The Sierra brand shown in the West Marine catalog gives Sierra's number of 18-4458D for the 5" to 6" size. Less than $60.00.

What am I missing? Why wouldn't this work?

Sounds like a good idea. Do all marine exhaust have water going through them to help cool? If so the rubber might have a short life, but it sure would keep the blowing rain out.

Yes, most marine exhausts are water cooled so you may have something there, Scott. I will be the test case. I am going down to West in a few minutes and will try it out on our Christmas trip to the Keys. If it gets hot and blows off I can't see that it would hurt anything except the tailgating car behind me.

Another reason I'm very happy with the Cummins exhaust setup on my BMC.

Exit is just to the right of the right frame rail are and straight out the back.

Ask the dealer what the heat range is on that rubber flapper and maybe someone could let us know hot the exhaust gets at the outlet. May save you $60
