So is it common for these Racors to get this dirty?
Is our fuel really that bad?

Since the PO is available, a question to him about the service interval of that Racor would answer your question. Then we wouldn't have to guess about the condition of your fuel.

I can condense our search for and the results of seeking "high performance" in our FC into this list:

1: I got older and got used to the FC pace and cruising at 60-62 MPH.
2: Replacing the OEM muffler with a 4" straight through muffler.
3: Ensuring that the fuel filters (Racor & engine spin on can), and air filter were clean.
4: Adjusting the throttle/fuel stop to provide 10-12# of boost (3802T).
5: Ensure your Facet fuel pump is working (not sure which years had this addition).

Although all these contributed...the key point was #1, followed by #2, #4.

Soon after we got smoke n mirrors, I went thru a big whoop de do in Dallas. Not a sharp drop, but front end when down, then rear, and back up. About one half full of fuel. Just like a boat going over a big wave and trough in the ocean.
About 50 miles later, I started losing power. Plugged racor filter. I figure after 25+ years, a fair amount of crud has settled in the tank, and that huge sloshing mixed it up.
I always carry a couple sets of filters, and tools to change them.

Most Racors on old buses have never been taken off and taken apart to really clen them.
What this shows is the Racor was really doing its job, spinning the fuel to clean it.
Now that you know it gets dirty you can keep "Fiat" (fix it again Tony) busy !

"Fiat"? too funny

Yep, scary to think if the Racor had not been there, we'd be looking at getting new injectors. Terrified to think what might be on the bottom of that tank. He did go by CAT and got all new fuel filters and a new air cleaner. Already did a complete oil job. I'd like to do away with the muffler at the very least, but would love new bigger exhaust .
When he took the old filter to CAT to get a replacement, the counter guy told him that filter was phased out over 12 years ago....so either it hasn't been replaced in that time or it was replaced with someone's NOS they had shelved.
In any event, they are ALL getting changed, just because.

Thanks. I think he already ordered 2 (one for our bus and one for the other bus).

Dana,
Frank W. Is right about those simple mods for better performance. I moved my facet to an easily accessed location when I replaced it.
Also, if you haven't already done so, you really need to apply for the AITA fleet card from Napa and find a local store that caters to truckers. You can get the card as a Wanderlodge owner and it saves me about 40-50% on filters and such for my bird.
The info is here on the site somewhere.
HTHs,
Bill
