Default exhaust leak 8v92

Jim Barone here..We are in Savannah now and as I was checking my oil I noticed what I think is an exhaust leak. Where the curbside exhaust manifold connects to the pipe that goes up to the turbo I've noticed some soot on the block and head right at that joint. Is that a common place for an exhaust leak? Does that connection have a gasket? Does anyone have any suggestions as analyzing this problem? Would an exhaust leak reduce the amount of turbo boost I see on the guage at the dash? no gasket metal to metal with flange clamp
the flange is probably worn or corroded

Any of the joints can leak. If you've only got a small amount of soot, especially if it's only in one small area of the joint, you're probably okay. Can you tighten the clamp any? Theoretically, any exhaust leak pre-turbo will decrease what your gauge reads. It may be slight enough you can't physically see the decrease, though. The real thing to worry about with amy exhaust leak is a fire possibility. The extra heat in the engine bay is not a good thing.

Most of the joints are an outward flange fitting to an inward flange, anymore. Sometimes just tightening the clamp fixes it, sometimes you need to replace parts. I apologize I can't add more specifics for you, but I didn't get to learn much about the 8v92's when I was looking to buy- other than a common overheating/need to rebuild syndrome due to poor maintenance.

sometimes you have to use a little muffler sealer to seal that joint.
muffler sealer is a metal paste that you goob onto the joint when you have the pipe off.
goob (nice word!) the paste on,replace the pipe and the clamps,it drys fast,by the time you get the clamps on it will be dry.
buy the sealer at NAPA.

Smile RE: Exhaust Leak

Just replaced both of my exhaust pipes to turbo for the same problem.The left pipe was about 400.00 and the right 100.00.I applied exhaust sealant to the ends of both pipes because the cast flanges show 24 year of ware.No more leaks. Amazing what money can do.Lee Condosta 85 PT40 Holden Beach N.C

About 2 years ago I replaced the entire exhaust system, including the muffler. New clamps and the whole 10 yards. I had a good size hole in the exhaust pipe just as it makes the turn coming out of the turbo. Given all the problems and risks, as Randy points out, it just seemed like the right thing to do.
