Default Fuel color

I changed the final fuel filter on my Mercedes/Jeep conversion today. A very standard affair as it is easy to get to and a screw on filter as well. So, I filled the filter with ATF, put it all together and started it up. Well, there is a clear primary filter right at the injection pump which I changed a few weeks ago.

After a few minutes of running the fuel being drawn up through the clear filter turned red. This of coarse happened as diesels recirculate fuel to keep everything cool and lubricated.

My concern is this: Could the red ATF be misconstrued as off road diesel? The odds of this happening are probably -getting hit by lightning- type odds but hey, who knows?

I know some here add ATF to their fuel on a regular bases...

Opinions??

Wow Ryan I havnt thought of that in a while. I would not think it would even tint 100 plus gallons of fuel but it could. Just enough and you might have some splanin to do Lucy.

Been told it's the same dye, and will set off the indicator if a cop sticks the tank.

Well, if you actually think about it, you didn't pay a fuel tax on the tranny fluid, so you really are running off-road fuel Not much, but, but as Mike says, if they stick the tank they will stick it to you as well.

For the 20 years I have been driving a diesel pick-up , I have never had them check my fuel . Now it may happen tomorrow lol ....
Greenwood has four truck stops so DOT police are usually around . Now it could be that they recognize my truck and know it's me is the reason I haven't been stopped . I've drove the same truck now for 15 years . It's very obvious it's a diesel , when the black smoke comes puffing out of my stacks . I'm glad I haven't been stopped , the straight veggie oil would have been frowned upon ....lol.

G., Does sales tax count?

I guess Sea Foam etc. becomes a road tax issue too, har!

What about adding Marvel Mystery Oil.
Red color same result.... We have used it for years as a fuel additive

As I understand it - if you have a diesel generator the draws fuel from the same tank you are permitted to have a percentage of off road diesel in your tank I don't know what the amount would be - but the situation warrants further investigation

I have had my Peterbilt stuck ONCE for off road fuel in over 2 million miles of driving. I pulled into an Iowa scale house, the red light stayed on while I was on the scale, and an officer came out, told me what he was going to do, and stuck both tanks. Waved me on when I passed.

Not sure how much $ it would have been if the sticks had come up red!

I watched officers stop all diesel vehicles and check the fuel tanks two years ago in Parker Az. They inserted a rod with a white ball on the end and were looking for red fuel. I asked!! Road block check was up for a couple of hours. That is the only fuel check I have seen.
