I have had a few instances when I was relying on the fuel gauge to be accurate, when I first got the BMC, never had a problem with the FC, the gauge was just shy of 1/2, going through a tollbooth in NY, when heading to the Taste of New Paltz rally... She shut down, coasting through the toll booth, lucky I had Easypass, pulled over, tried to start, no go!!!
Took off the towed and went to hardware store bought 5 gal diesel can and filled up, poured it in, went back and got another 5 gal... Started up after a few cranks, lucky!!!
Never let it get that low again, fill up at 1/2 tank on gauge...
Much to my surprise, heading to fuel pumps to fill at 1/2 tank, I Thought, she ran out again, 100 yds from pumps!!!
Now I go by mileage, average between 7-8 mpg, when I hit 600 fill up!!!

So as not to hijack your thread, I’m going to start a new thread on the topic. On the way home from Pine Mountain last week ran out of diesel on my 1980 FC when the gauge was showing a quarter of a tank. To compound the issue the gauge will NOT go below one quarter. It sticks there as though it’s bottoming out. I filled the tank and it only took 120 gallons. Now I am left wondering if I could have a 120 gallon tank or if the pickup isn’t going all the way to the bottom and I’m not able to get the last 30 gallons.

I wouldn't even bother testing it - just buy a new sending unit and put it in and see what your gauge does. Nobody can trust a 30+ year old fuel level sender or its float... I don't know how hard it is to get to on an FC, though.

On my 78FC it's under the storage drawer under the bed.

Only when the low fuel light comes on. It's good to test that.

The fuel level sending unit on my 96’ PT-42 is accessed through a 6” x6” +/- panel on the side wall of the second door behind the steer tire on the road side of the coach. If you have problems with the fuel level sending unit, clean the ground connection throughly before you consider replace it.
