Default Exhaust (?) squirrel cage motor noisy

There is a squirrel cage (circular) motor above the engine/around the exhaust pipe on my '86 PT-40 that make a horrendous sparking/electrical noise when running.

It was disconnected when I got the bus ...

Anyone dealt with this ?

Can I safely disconnect it short-term for 2-3-4 hour drives ? Anyone know what part/supplier I find to replace it ?

At first I thought it was a mechanical "ticking" from the louvers of the fan touching something, but it now seems to be a motor issue.

Any help welcome.

Marty

From the description this fan less than 6 inches in diameter is just an additional cooling fan used when coach first stops. Both of mine have been removed,no issues. It's used to move air to prevent additional heat from being transfered up into bedroom.

it was a very expensive fan,i once tried to buy one and decided to just remove it instead.
Most of them are bad or have been removed.

Hi All,

On the way back from RATS 2010, our squirrel cage fan began squeeling louder than our engine. So, we disconnected it, added it to the list of other projects.

In reviewing this thread, I noticed DonB's engine compartment pics (posts 2 and 12) included a different setup:

Anyone else have this mod or was it a transitional change made by BB? If duplicating it isn't too tough, would be a direction we'd like to explore.

Any ideas? Thanks!!!
