Default Toad Protection

Hi All,

We recently picked up a Jeep Wrangler to tow behind our FC. I've accumulated most of the tow gear we need, but I'm still looking for advice on protective screens, barriers, etc., to protect the front of the Jeep. I've read numerous threads on the WOG, but many pertain to equipment that is no longer available, or is dated.

By way of info, I'll be using a Blue Ox tow bar and we would only find ourselves on unpaved roads by accident. Also, our 'Bird has the factory mud flaps. Any experiences and/or recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Trent

We used to built what we named the "fold-a-shield".
An all metal folding rock guard for your toad.
We were the first on the market with a car guard.
Then along came Roadmaster and Blue Ox and there was several more,so we quit making that product.

We've used the Blue Ox Kar Gard to protect our 2013 Chevrolet Avalanche but found the guard rubbed on the bumper of the Bird in sharp turns so we took it off. We could get a hitch extension to remedy that issue but haven't done so yet. Until then we leave it at home.

I have removed my bumper mounted solid mud flap. The problem was that when I would hit a bump, the flap would hit the road and kick up debris into my tow. I still have the mud flaps behind the tires. You'll have to evaluate how your's is mounted.

If you're really going down rough roads you may want to consider a Protect-A-Tow. Some others here can talk about them, I don't have one. But I have looked at making my own using solar cloth, bungees, some PVC pipe, and eye hooks from Harbor Freight.

Default Rock guard

On our FC we had this type and we never had a damage problem on our toad.

The only time I've ever noticed anything on my toad is after driving in the rain. Oil and road grime leave a film covering the entire truck that just has to be washed off- but with such a long overhang I've never been worried about kicking anything up. I'd argue to say any sort of protective guard might be nice insurance but not guaranteed or needed. I worry more about merging traffic (that doesn't realise there's another 20 feet towing behind me) than I do rocks.

I love the protect A Tow.
Everytime i see one i throw some rocks on top of it or anything else i can find.
When we went to alaska with Cliff V he had one,i threw old gloves on it,bolts, dead birds and anything else i could find laying on the road.
Cliff was always saying "where did all this stuff come from?" and i would giggle!
