Question 11R 22.5 or 12R 22.5 on PT40?

On another post about a PT40 for sale, I mentioned it had 11R 22.5 tires and needed 12Rs John Pletcher posted that his came with 11Rs. He said you have to buy H rated instead of G rated.

I don't have the original specs so how many folks here are running 11Rs on 80s model PT40s?

I know I need to actually weigh the coach & check for sure but I am just wondering if anyone else is doing this. How about the rear tires? 11s or 12s? The tags should certainly be under the weight limit.

Since the tires usually age out before they wear out, using 11s would certainly help the budget.

Hi Tom,

There may be a Federal Certification Label above the driver’s windshield with the tire information for your coach.

Tom,

I went back with 11R's from 12R's on our PT36 when we purchased it back in 2010. I did this for several reasons: This way all 14 tires matched size wise on both our coaches. 11R's were more affordable. Both coaches came stock with 11R's so, if 11R's were/are DOT compliant, factory installed and safe, what then is the advantage to 12R's? If I was pulling a mack-daddy trailer like John Finn, then I would certainly consider the larger girth of 12R's. We purchased Kumho's for the rears (10 tires total) and Bridgestones for the front of the FC35 with Continentals for the front of the PT36. Haven't had any problems thus far but they will probably "time out" before they are ever "worn out", so sad

I run the 11R's John bought for his Bird because now its mine. When I picked it up from John last July, we stopped and bought a spare BFG ST230 in case of a flat. They performed well on the 3000 mile trek across country in July. No problems.

Mine had 12Rs 22.5 when I bought it, but they were aged out, so I had a tire shop get me some new ones, and when I arrived they did not have them, so after a call to Randy, he said that my bus came with 11Rs 22.5, and they had 8 with H rating, and I bought them and everything is well and good. They are cheaper, so it's the expense you should make your mind up on. Just an opinion. I have come to trust Ernies judgement very much. His advice has been spot on.

Thanks all for the information/opinions. I'm going to look for the above mentioned tag and weigh the coach. I see no reason buy 12Rs if H rated 11Rs will suffice.
