Default DT466 / MT643 swap

hope to swap this into my 78 fcrb by the end of the year. DT466 /MT643 lockup. hoping for 75mph and 10mpg, without lugging on hills. may also start looking for new gears to get rid of the 5.29's

Hope you got more parts than the pics. Bell housing, flywheel? That trans is probably not an OD unit, no Allison trans had OD in 600 or 700 series that I'm aware of, no room for the side pump either. Wanderlodge used the ZF in the later FC and SP's, if Allison had a OD trans, they'd most likely used that. Best solution for FC is 4.11 rear gear, period.
There should be a tag on the trans with series number etc., post it up, might be a unicorn but I doubt it.

yep, got the bellhousing, flexplate, starter etc. And meant to say lockup, not OD. Late night brain fart. Mike, what would be the easiest and least expensive OD transmission would you recommend to mate to a DT466?

These are the bomb:https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_fro...d3060&_sacat=0
However the adaption parts to mate to a 3208 are way rare and pretty costly new, don't know what's up with hooking to a DT. Keep in mind it's a 'puter trans and that means electrical sh$t.
Out of pocket ran me over 6 grand to fit MD's in my FC's, after I had the cores w/harness's and computers. Still had to have Allison fix on the shifter pad and 'puter, and verify the harness was sound. Keep in mind I own a full service transmission/driveline facility with machine shop.
Like I said, most FC people will have to make do with the 4.11 rear gear, cheap and effective.

wow, $6k AFTER having the trans / computer / harness?? sounds like having a 3060 is out of my budget. This DT466 / MT643 were rebuilt already and running driving (4900 they were in was crushed by a tree), and I got them for $1,400 delivered. That coupled with an eventual change to the 4.11 should get me about where I want to be.

Side note, what is the difference between the MT640 and the MT643?

Looks like a great project. I think a 466 would be a good fit for an FC. I'm curious about the noise level compared to a 3208 along with the dimensions. I would go with a 653 Allison and upgrade the diff to something faster.

This project and "budget" don't mix. It will cost more than any accurate calculation.

The DT466 is a great wet sleeve engine, and they can make some serious HP too.
I had several back in the day (in the 80's)

Something doesn't sound right here - is 10mpg possible? Isn't a DT466 250hp? It doesn't seem like much of an upgrade for the money/time? I guess I don't know what I don't know?
