Default 3208 na to 3208 250 hp

I sold The 300 yesterday in trade for a 250 and a large pill of cash. Life is funny.I will finish pulling 210 today and clean and prep for install.Don't know if that was a good or bad, a friend windowed his block in a service truck and i beat him to the 300 kinda a dirty pool game.

So instead of putting in a 300hp motor, you are now putting in a 250hp motor? Why did you change your mind? Will all the work involved be worth the 40hp difference, or is it a pretty easy swap?

Yes, The 250 turbo will make it worth the change and easy swap. Selling the 300 wasn't the smartest thing to do but the cash offer was to good to pass up. I will play with the 250 to get the most hp out that I can. At the end of the day the bird won't be worth a penny more one way or the other. This is just a starter bird for us and some day have the dreams on a sp 36.

Default 3208 swap

Hello
I have a 1980 FC that I just put a 250hp 3208 cat in. It had a 3208na in it. We also live Washington. This is our first Wanderlodge and our FC is a bit of a project, but if I can help let me know.

Dan

I also have a 3208na in mine, but am looking to change to a 3208t 250hp. can you let me know if your swap was worth the work? Also, did you have to change anything with the dog house, or did the turbo fit in?

Thanks.

If you can do the work yourself it is worth it. The 250 doesn't just make 40 more hp, it is how it makes the power, it rams a cylinder full of air instead of waiting for it to fill up, the turbo motors have a much better power band. I have run ours side by side with NA's and it is a huge difference. That said, a faster bus still isn't real fast.

Crit is correct with regard to how or better yet, when the power is made... not to throw a fly in the ointment, but the Allison 643 transmission is also "programed" differently between the turbo and non-turbo Cat's. Basically, the shift points are different etc. Something not to be overlooked...

Someone jump in here but I think the puppy pen is enlarged at the rear too?

Cat house is cut out at the base of the rear for turbo clearance. Our transmission is set differently, one should consider a new trans if going to the trouble of a new motor. Our PO did the re-power so all my info on the transmission is second hand but yes, the shift points are different, I don't know how different. He also regeared the axle, 5:29's to 4:88's. Its a big job, he was really into this coach and wanted it the way he wanted it, we love it. But the 250 change would be easier than a 300. Mike Hohnstein would be a great source of info on the transmission set up.

Dan, How did you handle youre air cleaner? My intake is 5inch taller i'm thinking of relocating that. And on the mt643 i'm installing. lets call it shift the point govenor on drivers side of trany is air operated and the one i pulled out is cable operated. So my thaught is to convert new trany to the cable program. Did you run in to any of that?

The cable is basically there to tell the trans when to downshift based on throttle position and rpm. I have found the springs involved with the transmission shift point cable to be a PITB (butt). It is a fine line between having enough spring to pull the cable back upon deceleration and having so much spring making the accelerator pedal stiff.

FYI, the upper end of the shift point cable is attached alongside the throttle cable at the injection pump. Be careful of rub points etc. Do not want to rub a hole through an injector line.

Good luck!
